Thanks shadowcat - not sure if you can take it with you if it's free. I'd contact them to see for sure though.

Just tell them you are considering moving to WordPress.

I love WordPress and have been working with it for several years now. And it's always a learning process. But that shouldn't deter you. However, as with any service you provide as a VA, you should have experience and knowledge first before offering it as a service. The best way to do that is develop some projects of your own. When I first swapped to WordPress (self-hosted) from Blogger my concerns were over the lack of ability to back up my writings or having control over my site. Self-hosting my own blog meant I could be sure regular backups were happening. I exported my family blog to WordPress on my own server and played with that. Then I wanted to start a new one fresh so began writing on a topic that had been of interest to me for a long time and built up an audience from there. Then I converted my business blog from Blogger to WordPress. So that meant I had 3 blogs in Wordpress and I was starting to get more experience. By that time Wordpress was beginning to be used for websites and not just blogs so I converted my website from Dreamweaver to WordPress. That was a huge undertaking as it was not a small site. But it got done.

These days I host (through two separate services, one based in the US and one in Australia), design and set up many sites and the majority are done in WordPress. It is a skill worth learning but it's important that you know and understand many of the basics first.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been using a Wordpress.com blog for a few years now and I've been doing research to find ways to learn more about Wordpress so that I can offer it as a service. There is so much information available these days that's it's hard to weed out what is actually useful and worth investing in! I just purchased the Digging Into Wordpress book to help get me started! Now I can REALLY work on managing Wordpress pages since I have my first Wordpress.org blog to manage for a client!

Has anyone used www.lynda.com to learn wordpress? I've considered getting a one month subscription because the few videos that they make free seem pretty thorough and easy to understand.

I was hooked up with Lynda.com for about one year. There are so many YouTube channels that offer wordpress training FREE that Lynda.com training was not a good avenue for my well earned $ any longer. However, I learned a LOT from Lynda.com. The 'authors' of the training videos are easy to follow along, to the point, very detailed, and have great worksheets and files that you can download. I found Lynda.com to be very useful at the time...they offer so many different training topics!
