Re: Learning WordPress while offering it as a service
I love WordPress and have been working with it for several years now. And it's always a learning process. But that shouldn't deter you. However, as with any service you provide as a VA, you should have experience and knowledge first before offering it as a service. The best way to do that is develop some projects of your own. When I first swapped to WordPress (self-hosted) from Blogger my concerns were over the lack of ability to back up my writings or having control over my site. Self-hosting my own blog meant I could be sure regular backups were happening. I exported my family blog to WordPress on my own server and played with that. Then I wanted to start a new one fresh so began writing on a topic that had been of interest to me for a long time and built up an audience from there. Then I converted my business blog from Blogger to WordPress. So that meant I had 3 blogs in Wordpress and I was starting to get more experience. By that time Wordpress was beginning to be used for websites and not just blogs so I converted my website from Dreamweaver to WordPress. That was a huge undertaking as it was not a small site. But it got done.
These days I host (through two separate services, one based in the US and one in Australia), design and set up many sites and the majority are done in WordPress. It is a skill worth learning but it's important that you know and understand many of the basics first.
