My secret is THE Secret. Yes, the one and only much publicized Secret. http://www.thesecret.tv/
The book was brought to my attention about 8 months ago. After reading a few pages, I thought about how my life had been going and how I wanted it to change. I then read the entire book and watched the movie and decided right then and there that I would change my life immediately. I started small, just trying to keep a positive attitude about things, seeing the bright side and trying to control how my thoughts and actions mirrored what I wanted out of life. I wrote down and make a Vision board of all the things I really wanted for myself and kept it realistic.
First goal- new car. The car I was driving did not...

I have a great business idea. I have the drive, the ability, the knowledge, the experience. I even know all the ways to promote myself to gain the most exposure...I have the ability to really get my business off the ground...BUT..I can't
As long as I am working full time for my company, I am limited into how much I can put myself out there, I am limited by how much information I can expose about myself, I am limited by who can know about my business....AND...on the other side, my job has a large pool of potential clients to draw from! My job is the one place that could benefit the most from my services, but my job is keeping me from making the most out of my company.
The catch 22, is that as long as they...

(Title Edit)
As a graduate of the CVP program. Virtual Dream OfficeServices became my business name. Living on a farm in Wisconsin, I never thought there would be chance to supplement my income and do it while at home. Having two small kids and working full-time there was no way for me to have a second job outside the home.
While going back to school for my associate degree in accounting, I did a research project on telecommuniting. Then, I got pregnant with my first child. While on maternity I researched more about working from home. At that time there were very few companies that hired employees this way and very few people did it as their very own business. I was too conservative to quit my job since I carry the health insurance for the...

Well, in my life spring cleaning really has nothing to do with actually cleaning! Living with a 1 year old, who is the happiest when all of her toys, clothes, and books, are strewn about the room, does not lend itself to a very “clean” house. This year spring cleaning means re-prioritizing my life. Having my daughter last year completely changed my outlook on life. I was also laid off, and really needed to determine what I wanted professionally. Initially, I thought I can do any job, as long as I make some money. But, I think that was still post-pregnancy brain! I have never been happy with the status quo. I always want to be improving, reaching for a goal, growing. So I started thinking, all the time, about what my new goals are....

I have a confession to make. I rather enjoy stacks. I don't particularly enjoy cleaning and organizing, I understand their purpose, but I don't enjoy them, and I will put them off if possible. I have a dear friend who has been a boss a couple of time, and a mentor for more than half of my life now. She once commented that my desk always looked like a hurricane, and she was glad to know that I knew where each and every item was in the stacks. But that was 20 years ago; I had a lot less on my desk, and in mind to keep track of the piles.
Periodically though, my boss would put her foot down and say “Ok, I know you know where it is, but *I* have to know where to find it when you are out of the office.” OUCH!

Why Do Salespeople Love Their Jobs?
Posted 05-19-2009 at 01:29 PM by NikAssist
I have sold everything from cars to copiers, from leasing apartments to selling Salon Coupons. People laugh when I run down all the companies I've worked for in the past when my attention span was not longer than 1 year on any one job, but I have so much experience in different industries, I'm thankful that I have travelled the road I have chosen.
When I was in sales, or looking for a new position, I was drawn to sales because of the freedom it allows in your day to day schedule, especially those jobs that require you to be out in front of other people all day. The freedom to leave work at 2:00 pm on Friday and pick up a golf game, or be able to be at every child game, recital, or field trip without having to ask a higher...

Did you ever notice that spring cleaning doesn’t just result in a sparkling home, but it clears your mind! Suddenly you can finish scrapbooking, complete projects or start others that you put off because you felt overwhelmed.
Whenever I think of spring cleaning I don’t just think about how my space will look, but I also think about how great I’ll feel afterwards. I make a list of each room and what I’ll need, gather my supplies, press the curtains, shake out and wash the rugs, and then I’m off to the races. I put on my favorite music, grab the feather duster, and I’m off. It’s time to get into the corners.
When I imagine spring cleaning (originally living in Long Island, NY), I think of opening every window...

What comes to mind when you think of spring cleaning? Likely it relates to warmer weather, sunshine, and a fresh scent throughout your home. For the last couple of years, however, I've done “spring cleaning” in January. Closets, drawers, and bookshelves are all thoroughly cleaned out. Boxes of clothes and household goods are donated to charity, and the space is washed or dusted as needed. Since I love to be outside when it is warm, I think I do my “spring cleaning” when the weather is colder - once it warms up it is hard to keep me inside! Spring cleaning gives me a great sense of accomplishment. Things no longer needed leave my home, giving me space. What is kept is often reorganized and easier to find (at least for a while!).

This week, I am going to get my website to a point that I am proud to show it off...I am not saying I will be completely satisfied with it, but at least I will not be embarassed by it.
I would like to get at least 2 new contacts...on my way with one that greeted me this morning with the chance to WOW him with my services...LMAO..he sent me a quote request and I'm done within the hour...LOL..I may need to slow down if I'm going to make any money at this Regardless...I just want to SHOW people what I can do so they will PAY me to do it!
OK...on another note, someone said my enthusiasm is contagious, and this is not the first time I've heard it...so...hoping you ALL catch my disease!

I am often asked what’s the best way to choose a virtual assistant to partner with. I always encourage folks to go with their gut instinct. Find a virtual assistant that is a “fit” for them. There are so many virtual assistants out there that you are sure to find someone that you feel comfortable with and that can provide you with the services that you need. If you are on Twitter for instance ask folks for recommendations.
Ask questions! For instance if you are looking for a virtual assistant that is going to perform the work themselves don’t just assume that is the case. Always ask as a lot of va’s do outsource/subcontract their work to other va’s so that they may provide their clients with a wider range of services that...

I know that so many Virtual Assistants are now using Social Media and Social Networking to increase their own online visibility and connect with potential clients. I also know that more and more Virtual Assistants are assisting their clients with Social Media related tasks. As with any medium that you are using to market yourself or for your clients, there is always a need to stop every once and a while to evaluate or re-evaluate what you are doing, its effectiveness and how you might be more innovative with your current social media strategy.
So let's consider some ways you can clean-up or freshen up your social media and social networking accounts.

SOP, or Standard Operating Procedures, is something every business needs, even one-person, home-based businesses. It may cover financial issues, including deposits and cancellation fees; branding issues, such as how the telephone is answered and what font is used in correspondence; administrative issues, including the forms and checklists you use internally and when working with clients; and much more.
The best time to develop your SOP is when you are just getting started. Of course, it will need to be modified from time to time, as you revise your procedures and implement new ones, but at least you will have something to work from.
This topic is covered in Michael Gerber’s bestselling book, The E-Myth Revisited...

This year spring cleaning is gong to be extra special.
Normally I just kinda do extra things every week at I see the need. But
This year my mother and her husband had so much fun spring cleaning their house with help from my little sister that they have offered to come over and help. Yah right who would offer to help someone spring clean right? Well is gives us a whole day to spend together and have fun, there will be no rush or pressure to get it all done, with 3 doing the work of 1.
I am looking forward to the opportunity to "hang" with my mom and get that darn spring cleaning out of the way.

Oh boy! Well, Spring Cleaning to me means that I need to buy a large box of yard sized garbage bags and carefully open each closet in the house, because I know that our winter 'stash' of 'treasures' are going to fall all over the place.
Each item gets a new home; keep, give away, throw away, recycle.
One thing that happens to me, mentally during the Spring Clean-a-thon, is I'm reminded of the many memories of the passing season. How blessed I am have had this time with my loved ones (mess and all!!)

Spring Cleaning - Window Washing the Easy Way
Posted 05-15-2009 at 10:44 PM by D_Victoria_Virtual_Assistance
Ah, yes, Spring Cleaning time is here again. And that means it is time once again for window washing. There are two types of window washing. The first type, I absolutely loathe and if I could, I would hire someone else to do. This type includes windows of the glass variety.
The second type of window washing, I thoroughly enjoy and oftentimes, find it to be a time of reflection and enjoyment. This type of window washing involves my computer. Oh yes, I am talking about spring cleaning my Windows OS.
Why not use this time of year to clean your computer? You are already in the cleaning and organizing frame of mind, right? I like to go through all of the folders on my desktop and in my documents, organize my files,...

Constantly Seeking Excellence
Posted 05-15-2009 at 04:57 PM by NikAssist
Yes, I am good at what I do, yes I am confident enough in my ability that I can speak that without any doubt of my performance. But, I am never satisfied and always seeking to do better and better. To do that quote faster, to make it just as good in less time, or better in even less time! My goal is to always not only try my best, but try to do it better than I did the time before. Without striving for excellence continuously, I find that complacency sets in. I start thinking, well, I can do that in 15 minutes, so I’ll just wait until I’m ready and do it…when I should be thinking, I can do it in 15 minutes, but let me try to do it now in 10! Or, let me see how I can spruce this up a bit more in that same 15 minutes, something, anything,...

Enjoying the beautiful day that was so graciously given to us.We we're spending our afternoon outdoors today. I was swinging my oldest son, and out of the blue he said to me "Mom, what do you want to be when you grow up?" It really took me by surprise. My answer to him was "I want to be your Mom." With a huge smile and big bright eyes he said "Really?". Totally shocked at where this conversation was headed, he said to me "Are you sure you don't want to do something else when you grow up?". Of course I replied with "No Way". Thinking that was the end of the conversation he then ask "Did you always want to be my Mom?" Looking to see if I could read into what he was thinking I said...

Where to Begin?
Posted 05-14-2009 at 12:03 PM by NikAssist
I am trying so hard to be patient. This venture is so exciting and there is so much to be done and I want to do it all right NOW. But I know that is not only not possible, but not the best way to go about doing anything. So, first things first! I am starting my blog about the adventure and little tid bits along the way. Once my website is up and running I will probably just go ahead and copy my blog from here to the site, since the topics will be the same to save time.
So where I am to date: Well, I have a name, I have the beginning of a website (I have my title up but no content yet )
I have posted myself on one Discussion board in the industry...there are not a lot of boards out there for our reps to...

Last Saturday we decided to venture to town for some groceries. Of course there is 2 grocery stores in our little community, but to get the best deals you head towards the bigger towns when your in need of the mother load of groceries.
While were out, we decided to dine out. And, when I say dine out I mean somewhere other than McDonalds. We finally chose Ruby Tuesdays. I instructed my boys, this was a nice restaurant and to at least pretend like they had some manners. After we all 4 had carefully looked upon the menu, we gave our order to the waiter that was ever-so waiting impatiently. As a matter of fact, at one point I'm pretty sure I looked at the waiter and said - I apologize it's taking so long, we don't get out much....

Here in New Zealand, Spring season doesn't arrive until September. BUT celebrating another country's season is just as good a reason as any to make a spring "to do" list and wipe out some of those little things.
Like dust, the little things we've neglected to do or run out of time to do, build up. Sitting quietly on the surface, waiting silently for our attention. Do we dust? No, because there's more important things to do of course.
If we don't make that concerted effort to complete them, we eventually start getting allergy symptoms... headaches.
They might have been small specs of dust initially, just a 'to do' that...

Before joining the forum, I purchased a lot of manuals and do it yourself book to find out info about this field of Virtual Assistant. This field incorporated a lot more application and computer awareness. It also was more flexible than just being a traditional Secretary. I went to classes for certain applications I never used, and I mastered them.
I graduated from college with an AA Degree, (1982) minored in Law and Legal Secretarial Science. When I started typing I used a manual typewriter--Royal (lets just say I was a teenage in high school in the 70's), then the IBM electric typewriter was next, then a Smith Coroner Word Processor, then finally my first computer in 1998 a Phionex...

I’m getting ready to spring clean my office and when I think of spring cleaning, my mind recalls images of my Mom, me and my sisters with brooms, mops, buckets, scrub brushes, rags, furniture polish, bleach, starch, and lots of elbow grease. Every spring, just before Mother’s Day, as soon as Dad and my brother went to work, we would tackle the annual house cleaning. Dad and my brother worked the afternoon shift so when we girls got home from school, we were ready to work up a storm until bedtime. Even though I was quite young, I still had to work as hard as the older ones. This ritual usually went on from Monday through Friday and was always done by Dad’s days off on the weekend. The house was a wreck for a week every spring but it sure...

For those of you who live in the rural areas of the US, you can sympathize with me living in a ranch-style house. For many years we lived in a two bedroom, one bath (with Pepto Bismol pink bath tub and tile - this really dates our house) with a one-car attached garage. So, a couple years ago we built a new garage and then the next year, extended our house. This was a GODsend for us and now we have a normal-size three bedroom, two bath home. Everything is tidy and has it's place....BUT, my office. For some reason our now college-aged son thinks what ever he doesn't want anymore, he just piles in my office. Along with any boxes, donations to Freecyclers, etc. are just dropped in the office! Along with all my books and scrap booking...

I know it is Saturday but I had some things I needed to tend to in my office. I finished my bookkeeping and set aside three things that I would get to next week during office hours. But where to put them, usually I clip them up on my file cab with a magnet ready for the next day but one look around my office and I knew that it needed a good Spring Cleaning.
Why is it that everything seems to land right in my work area. I thought my filing was done but there still seemed to be too many papers, envelopes, and well, just stuff. The wires under my desk needed some taming and my clients business cards were neatly organized scanned and verified, mine were still sitting in a pile.
Where to start. I took a look...

Is LinkedIn worth the effort? I have been analyzing this for myself and for clients. In February I blogged about seeing my connections grow. That was awesome but how do I connect those connections to my home page?
I use the 3 social media giants. Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I love Twitter because it is immediate. I love talking to people in real time and seeing what is going on. I like Facebook but I don’t like all the fluff. LinkedIn has been a real power broker for me. I find myself cultivating more connections there through groups. I have been posting information that I find interesting to these groups and also my own blog entries. I have seen traffic to my home page grow and at least triple in the past month....

As a virtual assistant I am always trying to get the biggest bang for my software buck. PC World released today it's " 101 Undiscovered Freebies: The List". I thought I would give you my take as I have tried many of these "Best Bets" programs.
* Advanced SystemCare Free- I have not used this program. Instead I recommend Glary Utilities. Make sure you uncheck the install Ask toolbar.
* Avast Home Edition - this program is my college son's best bet. He has reviewed it on his blog " Pearls of Wisdom"
* Digsby - I reviewed this program earlier this month and gave it a mixed review.
* DVD Flick - I have not used - looks interesting though.
* Gmail Labs...

When the question of what does "success as a virtual assistant" mean to me my mind was instantly flooded with thoughts. My VA business started over a year ago and has brought me many joys and a lot of new experiences.
My most meaningful success as a Virtual Assistant is truly getting to know my clients and their business and helping them reach their goals. Nothing makes you feel better then helping others, that's my opinion any ways. Giving clients ideas to help their business, creating a plan and moving forward with that plan....then the end results are that cherry on the top of the ice cream.
There are of course my personal successes as a Virtual Assistant as well. I have taken online courses to broaden...

"You don't have to be everything to everyone; you just have to be something to someone." Don't you think this quote speaks volumes?
Seriously though, let's embrace this profound statement for a moment...
(Embracing)
So, here's the thing...I've quickly discovered as a business owner; I've strived to market myself to a large group of people, I also had a desire to "please" everyone.
Here's the problem:
I simply couldn't! I couldn't possibly please everyone, it's just not possible. When I created my marketing material with promises to my prospects that I was the best; and in turn prospects just had to do business with me, I was falsely advertising myself...

I am the founder of Connecting2Give, and I am, as you might guess from my being at this site, a virtual assistant.
I LOVE being a VA.
Connecting2Give is about helping others, giving back to the community, paying it forward, and sharing in whatever ways we can, be it donations of money to someone who needs help with a heat bill, donations of clothing to a single mom going on an interview, or even just being a friend when someone needs a shoulder to cry on.
A couple of months ago, I decided to start featuring businesses that give back on Connecting2Give.
The first business I'm featuring is Virtual Assistant Forums! I love this place!

Success is measured by many in all sorts of ways. For some it is money or wealth and for others it is numbers, whether it is clients, followers or employees. To me success boils down to two things: time and happiness.
Most you understand the happiness part but time you ask. Well I look at it this way, what is the point of happiness if you have no time to enjoy it. Really, if you are overwhelmed time wise than are you really achieving your happiness. Don’t get me wrong, time does not mean are you busy, time means are you spending it wisely to enjoy all the things that are important to you.
So the question was posed “Success as a Virtual Assistant is…” and here is my answer. As a virtual assistant I have...

**Winner of the March 2009 VAF Blogging Challenge!** Success as a Virtual Assistant Is...
Posted 03-14-2009 at 11:33 AM by D_Victoria_Virtual_Assistance
Determining success as a Virtual Assistant is something different for each and every one of us.
The actual meaning of the word success is:
1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.
2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
3. a successful performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.
Success as a Virtual Assistant can be any one of those things, a combination or something else entirely.
I think the most important thing to remember is that we travel through life at our own pace. We are all at different points in our journey. A Virtual Assistant that has a full practice and is doing well, may be considered...

I've over come many obstacles in life, many nay-sayers and have beaten the odds that were stacked against me.
Success is being your own boss, taking care of your family and home, being where the Lord wants you to be and not caring what others say about you.
Success is being honest, working hard, keeping the faith.
Motto:
Eyes to the hill,
Ears open to your mentors promptings,
Arms willing to help others,
Feet planted firmly to the ground.
To Your Success!!

This is my very first blog and since I am fairly new to the virtual assistant world, I will base this writing from that perspective.
My day begins at 6:30 a.m. After hitting the snooze once or twice, I pull myself out of bed, grab a cup of coffee and sit down with the cat for his morning massage. By 7:10 a.m., I am out the door with 15 year old granddaughter to take her to high school. I refer to this experience as entering the war zone and am equipped with the necessary armor. In the war zone, I encounter moms and dads on their way to their J.O.B. They will do whatever is needed to get those kids out of the vehicle in order to rush off to their destinations. Things like park in the middle of the drive, holding up traffic,...

Upon brainstorming for this blog I had several flashes of imagery cross my mind. One of a “blissful day” or a “pull out my hair day”. Another was a unique story that told of my day tracked to the “T” and yet another was a diary of my day filled with all the information and resources that crossed my path in a day. Many more came and went, but nothing seemed to bloom into finger movement and progression on my screen. So upon my predicament and as a philosopher, I began to wander in thoughts....
.... She positioned herself at her desk as she strained for thought. She couldn’t help but notice the head bopping sound that started penetrating her speakers. Instantaneously her urge to pop out of her chair and do a little jiggle was to...

7:00 am Wake up. Coffee is on, thanks to hubby's forward thinking.
7:15 am reading through emails that came overnight. I'm looking for requests for information for a major client. Watching for leads to be placed with agents. Seeing if there are any voice mails that need to be returned. Love that 2 minute commute after a stop for coffee.
7:30 am mentally run through open tasks.
- Scanning documents to return to client
- Leads to place
- Updates
- Meeting at 9 am CST
- House showing appointment at 11:30 CST
- Phone calls
- House showing appointment at 2 pm
- Gym
- And the list goes on
8:45 am- this is when things start to...

A Day in the Life of a Virtual Assistant
Posted 02-24-2009 at 10:22 PM by MandyJ
The topic for this month’s blogging challenge instantly had me worried. “A Day in the Life of a Virtual Assistant”. I worried because I’m not exactly a Virtual Assistant….yet. I will be soon. But at this stage, I guess I’m more of a Virtual Assistant in training….or preparation….or something like that.
So I guess I have two choices in relation to this topic.
1. I can imagine what a day in the life of a Virtual Assistant is like.
2. I can write about what a day in the life of a preparing Virtual Assistant is like.
I do love imagining, but in the interests of accuracy and sticking to the topic, I’ll go with the second option.
In my experience, a Day in the Life of...

We''re certain YOU have a great idea for a social group here at VAF and this blog post is your invitation to start one up. Here's how:
Click the GROUPS link in the main menu, then choose GROUPS (<--- or just click that link right there!) Once you reach the main page where all of our current social groups are listed, scroll down to the bottom and you'll see a link to Create a New Group. Click that link and fill in the fields on the next page - give your group a NAME (something nice and descriptive so people understand what it's all about!), fill in the description, make your group public or private, and click "Save" - your group is then ready to invite people to join!
Get people to join and participate...

I start out my day, waking with an alarm,
some mornings, that's tough,
as my covers are warm.
Husband has made coffee, pour the cream in my cup.
Wake up my teen. "Hey, you'd better stay up!"
Throw on my sweats, brush my teeth, wash my face,
Feed the cat, feed the teen, "Yes, it's oatmeal for darn sakes."
"Leave the iPod at home, don't even ask.
And please don't forget your books and school lunch pass."
(Help me this day, as I ignore his morning sass!)
We'd better get going;
I've got much on my plate; emails, Twitter,
social networking won't wait.
Already my head is a-spin;
...

My days are quite long and most are quite crazy. It starts around 5:15am, I hear my husband whispering "Would you want to pack my lunch"? raising his eyebrows like it's a special treat for me. I drag to the kitchen with one eye open and throw something together and place neatly in his lunchbox. I seriously wait for the day, he calls from work asking me why I packed him frozen waffles, I'm such a zombie at that time. Most days I lay back down for about an hour. At, 6:30am it's my turn to awake, jump in the shower and start my day.
I then check my email, twitter, begin breakfast for the boys and wake them up by singing to them "You are my sunshine". We then usually argue over where who's socks are where and...

Your wish is my command...
Friday
5:00PM - Clear desk and file work for Monday. Read, review, and file e-mail inbox to zero. Quick scan of e-mail pending items to ensure nothing urgent was missed. Computer OFF (If you’re lucky I might check my e-mail via my blackberry but chances are I won’t reply. Computer gets turned back when I get to the office Monday morning.)
Here’s what I’m busy doing:
Sneak Out Saturday – taking my nephew to The Donut House in our jammies for donuts and coffee/hot cocoa.
Auntie Day – taking my niece to “the coffee store” for hot cocoa then shopping at Michaels for craft stuff.
Winter Carnival – Going to a local ski resort to watch the...

A Day In the Life of Me
Posted 02-10-2009 at 10:45 AM by D_Victoria_Virtual_Assistance
The sun beats down on me and I am surrounded by trees, plants and the sounds of nature. A cool breeze touches my face. I spot a bluebird out of the corner of my eye and see a chipmunk quickly scurry away. I take a sip of my hot tea (a touch of milk and a bit of honey) and take a deep breath, then sigh. This is the life...
Then I hear the all familiar sound of my laptop buzzing to life. I swivel in my office chair towards my desk and away from my own personal real life painting of nature (my backyard). Oh yes, this is the life. The day in the life of a Virtual Assistant...me!
First thing on the do list is check my email, which on some days can be a dauntless task. As I wait for my email to load I watch as my co-workers...

People chatter about marketing to your intended customers base, but how often do they tell you how to identify such a group of people? A target market refers to a market segment at which your firm directs a marketing program. In essence people tend to be too broad in their definition of a “target market”. For example if the your company is to intrigue the large transportation market the first step is to identify the market segments (or subgroups) within the larger transportation market.
Are you looking for air travelers or boat passengers or something else? If you are targeting customer to fill a cruise line then it is essential to aim for the transportation market that share similar wants, preferences and product use behaviors....
