How do you approach networking?

Networking Definition: the developing of contacts or exchanging of information with others in an informal network, as to further a career.

I think all business owners large and small know that networking is vital to the advancement of their career or growth of theircompany, but how many people actually do it and do it well?

Networking comes easy to some and not so easy to others. There are a number of things you can do to enhance the experience for all involved.

Maintain dialogue with many different people even if they can’t help you at the current point in time. Nothing looks worse than running to someone only when you need something.

Know what you can do and how it can benefit others. Practicing your elevator speech will help you ensure you answer “What do you do?” with confidence and conviction. Along with knowing what you do, always keep business cards, brochures or other marketing materials handy. You never know when the opportunity will arise to promote yourself and your business.

Ask others what they do, what they are interested in and listen to the response. This sometimes can take some practice as we often get wrapped up in our own world. Try it, you never know what you will learn.

If you meet someone who is interested in what you do, be sure to follow-up. It may not turn into anything, but you have now expanded your network and you never know where it may lead.

Join clubs and networking groups. It will often take some time to find the groups that are best suited to your needs. Asking others which groups have benefited them will help.

How do you best like to network? Do you prefer online or in person at events and trade shows?

I was fortunate to meet someone that told me to check out BNI - Business Networking International. What a great organization and benefit it is to belong to such a group of professionals. Information on profitable networking is available on www.BNI.com and free podcasts from Ivan Misner offer valuable information for business owners and networking.
What made the difference for me as a business owner was having the responsibility of making cold calls to market our computer business. My husband and I had everything tied up in making our business a success and that part of the business is not what I was interested in. SO, after learning the "Givers Gain" philosophy and the structure of the meeting it all made sense to me. A networking event in my opinion is learning about others businesses and how can I help tell others about the services they provide?
Telling others about this great opportunity to sell their services was something I feel changed my thinking of sales.
Starting a chapter in our town was the most challenging thing I have ever done, and the most rewarding. I was really shy when we started the chapter and the Division Manager of BNI in our area said - once I started attending these meeting I will not be able to shut up about it. HA and so true.
There is a podcast that Darlene did with Ivan that is on her website. Check it out and feel free to write if I can help. Regards, Sheila

I do most of my networking through webinars and forums. I do belong to our local Chamber of Commerce, and if a live networking event was available and I could go I would try to. But as I intend to obtain most of my business through the internet that is where I am focusing.
