What to write - a reflection

Posted 4 Weeks Ago at 06:04 PM by calliope
Last week I was talking with a friend of mine about my struggles with actually blogging. I told her that I felt like I needed to write something brilliant and her response was "write about what you know.", I laughed and told her she sounded like my college professors who always said the same thing.

In college I always struggled with writing my papers, partly because there was also the deadline and I hate deadlines. I still wanted to write the best papers ever. I always wanted to think about my research before writing. As I have gotten older I am better about meeting my deadlines. But I still have this innate desire to write the most brilliant things in the world. I can't even say what would be brilliant, because my brilliant might not be your brilliant. Perhaps I am just looking for verbal validation that I am a good writer.

I have begun writing down topic ideas and this helps. It is still very slow going as I have been working on launching my business and dealing a lot of personal struggles. I am sure in a few more months I won't feel so stuck most of the time.

I feel you! I struggle with writing as well. I read others people's post and they are so witty or clever or they are just oozing with knowledge and I wander... 'will I ever be that good.' Then I realize that if I can just relax and let it flow then I will write something that is true to me. I really don't want to be like everyone else... I just want to be me. When I think to hard about it I end up messing it up and it isn't true to myself.

So.... try to relax and be true to yourself and your friend gave you great advice "write about what you know".

Best of luck to you!

It seems that I have the same disorder. For whatever reason, I too have this ridiculous need to write something that is completely substantiated with facts -- must go back to attending a Catholic elementary school and being spanked on the hand with a ruler that would just pop out of nowhere!

But, yes, blogging is such an art. I've jumped on the train, though, and I am starting to love the whole thing.

I think the secret is to #1 learn what is expected. #2 learn the basics. #3 write what you are passionate about. #4 check your grammar and make sure it's really perfect -- there will be others reading it. And of course, we want it to be perfect -- and that brings us to the beginning!

I thought your blog was terrific. It's such an exciting thing to be able to learn and start loving something that you never even considered doing. I love blogging! (I'm only on my second blog -- so who do I think I am commenting like a real blogger?)

I also stuggle with writing on blogs, and typing minutes. I procrastinate and do everything else first. Although, I feel I have a lot to add and share I have a hard time getting the first and right words. I admire those that write so well.
