Question How to make a link to a specific page in an magazine?
Hello tech savvy VAs out there,

Is there a way to make a link to a specific page in an online magazine?

I often have parenting articles in online magazines that I'd like to make a link to and I have a new client that needs the same thing for her online portfolio.

For instance: I have an article, Are Your Kids Empty Nesters? on page 46 in Staten Parent magazine. Here's the link:

http://www.siparent.com/digital_magazine.php

Thanks for any help.
Jan

Hi Jan,

Somethings you can't link directly to and I think a page in that mag is one. But they do offer a download version that you can then upload to your site and link to.

Hi,

I know I can make a pdf of the article and then I could link the pdf to the title of the article (since I just learned how to do that.)

But it's good to know that it's not possible to link an article directly to an online magazine.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Jan,

If the article is online and appears in your browser, you can copy the link and then go into the post and highlight the title of the article. Then you click on the link feature which appears in the text editor of the site you are using.

If you are using WordPress, for example, you follow the above and then click on the image in the text editor that looks like a link, as in a link in a chain. A dialog box opens, you copy that link in the box, save and then the link to the online magazine appears in the post. Save the post and if someone clicks on the link it will open up the article.

What you want to do is hyperlink a piece of text. You can link anything that is online provided you have the link to that article and a text editor to hyperlink the words.

If that is confusing, Google how to hyperlink and you can find much information. If you still need help, let me know.

Hi Janine,

With some articles depending on the parenting magazine, a link only goes to the entire magazine. You can turn to the page of the article but that specific page doesn't have a specific url. Not all of the magazines are like that. Staten Island Parent magazine just happens to be one of those magazines.

Many of the magazines, I can make a pdf of the article to save a copy of it. I was just wondering if I could tweak the url on one.

Thank you always for your help.

If it doesn't have its own link, you can't do anything about that other than making the pdf and uploading to your host which you have been doing.

How does the magazine appear online?

I see, Jan. It is actually an article embedded into a third party program called Yudo. So there is no link.

You have a few choices, though.

You can contact the magazine directly and tell them you would like to use the article and ask them if they can send you a direct link or you can ask them to send you a pdf copy.

You can also use the 'enlarged' link which is here http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1xu...l_magazine.php (use bitly to shorten that link and pretty that up)
and link that to your post. The user will open up the enlarged version of the article on their screen which won't open to the actual website itself.

Or, you can extract paragraphs you want to use for your post and by typing them manually, reference the article, the magazine, the author and the site itself.

Hi Janine,

I hope we aren't boring anyone going back and forth but I'm learning. All of this is great information. I wanted to know what is possible and what is not possible, and you answered the question.

I make pdfs of my parenting articles all the time (that is when I remember to do it.)

What I want to know now is
1. how did you know it was Yudo? and
2. how did you find or know where to look for the enlarged link. Many of the magazines have enlarged links so it's not a problem.

I love all this information.

Jan

Jan,

Underneath the article embedded in the website link you provided is a link that states, "Enlarge this document in a new window". When enlarged, it opens up a new window which provides the separate link I referenced to you in my previous post.

A quick look at Yudu, which is referenced below the 'enlarge' link and you will be taken to the Yudu site which explains that it is a third party program that magazines can subscribe to.

Just a little sleuthing to come up with a response for you...

The reason I mentioned that you could also contact the magazine for a pdf is that sometimes the online conversion programs which convert a site link to pdf don't do it so 'cleanly'. Often pages are broken up and don't look so 'pretty'. So my suggestion was to ask the magazine for an original copy so that you have a better copy to upload to your site. But if your url to pdf conversion works well, then you don't need that suggestion.

Conversations between forum members is acceptable if the conversation is kept on topic. If it becomes a personal conversation, or if someone asks an unrelated question within a thread that is not on topic, that would be viewed as discourteous. I have been answering your original question so we are fine.

Janine
