Briana, if they didn't say anything about the links on the download page, it's wrong and they have no right to do that, but unfortunately some spammers do these kind of thing.

On the other hand imagine you made a website and your client removed your link; I wouldn't like that at all

Try customizing the default theme that comes with WP because it's very simple (I always do this) and feel free to ask any question here
