I am afraid that I am going to "swim against the current" on this one.

I feel that clients look at the firm as a whole, when it comes to reputation. especially since, if there is a problem, the "buck stops" with me.

I don;t feel the need to inform the client that I have subcontracted the work out, since the bottom line is that the work meet or exceed the client's expectations.

I have a friend who does mostly medical transcription, but will take other work sometimes. On a few occasions when I was swamped and she wasn't, I'd take a project that had many different recordings and would give some to her. She did the work on those and sent the transcripts to me. I reviewed them slightly and then sent on to my client. On these I did not tell my client I was giving some of the work to someone else. I've know this person for years and her work is impeccable.

If I were to hire someone else as a subcontractor, I would definitely discuss that with my client.

I think it would only be fair to let your client know your intentions...

This is a really interesting question. I think that I would probably lean towards only sharing that information with the client if it was truly necessary.

My reasoning is that if this is my business, and I am the owner, then it isn't necessarily the client's business to know every detail about my own employer-employee relationships. However, I'm in favor of including a statement in the contract, just in case.

I agree with this assessment, exactly.

I've always let my clients know if and when I'm outsourcing one of their projects. With clients' work being confidential, I would want the client to have the final decision of who is working on their project and who has access to the information.

I think that you should let your client know. It would be much better to have that conversation up front then to have an Opps from a misdirected email. You will gain trust from being honest.

This is a good question and I am looking forward to reviewing the answers posted here. I "white label" my services with a couple of clients and I subcontract with another. The VA's who use "white-label" services do not share with clients unless asked specifically. The other VA I work with does tell her clients directly that I handle the requests.
