Default Chances of a newbie being considered for subcontracting?
I saw this question reiterated on another forum and wondered the same thing.

I know this solely depends on variables such as skill set, attitude, and much more, but I was wondering how common is it for a newbie to be considered for a subcontracting position of any sort?

I am definitely interested in doing so, but have yet to reach my limit to review RFPs (has this as a goal to complete by the end of this month) and haven't had much luck finding companies that are currently doing so. I just would like to know where to start, I guess.

If anyone could provide any insight on the matter, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Look forward to hearing your responses!

It's all in what a newbie puts into selling themself. A great way to start doing that to be considered for subcontracting projects is to become known for a service you love to provide. This forum is a great place for a lot of encouragement. One great thing about subcontracting is you can always move forward and start finding your own clients.

Thank you hbplifestyle! Your insight is greatly appreciated.

I definitely agree that self-promotion is a big factor, and know that there's a line between not enough and too much. I guess I'm still trying to find that line and not overdo it. I know that subcontracting can lead to other opportunities as well, so that is why it's such an interesting concept.

I guess it's safe to say that while in the midst of starting up my own business, I am open to subcontracting and can take on any challenge at hand.

Thanks for the resource, I will be reviewing that and continuing my efforts on all of my goals.

My very first client was a subcontracting job.

I joined a very supportive network for Virtual Assistants, contributed to conversations with valuable information (not just random posts to get my name out there etc), and one of the VA's asked me if I would like to be on her team of subcontractors!

I guess there are no specific steps to take to become a subcontractor, I think it's just the 'right place at the right time'. If you make it clear that you're interested in that sort of work, then someone might offer you a place on their team!

Good luck with it though

Ugh! All I know is that I tried looking for a job as a freelancer once but I never got any projects, probably because I didn't have any experiences yet. I did find a job as a virtual assistant and had been working for the same company for 2 years!

For me it generally depends on the skills and attitude of the individual and the needs of my clients. If needed, I would generally subcontract simpler tasks first then if that goes well I would expand the complexity of the work.

Now if I needed a subcontractor based on a clients request for a specific skill I do not possess, then I most likely would not contract a newbie. In this case I would want a more seasoned VA.

Hang in there jobs / clients will eventually come around. It just takes time and dedication.

I definitely agree with you Julie.

It take's a little while to get your name out there - but do it consistently, give your honest opinions and be genuinely helpful and before you know it work will come your way!

I'm also a newbie and its been quite a challenge finding my first client. I have been researching of ways to start working for another VA so I can gain experience. Any recommendations of how to go about finding subcontracting work? Any and all advice would be welcomed.

Thanks
Georgia

The best advice I can give any newbie is to join a network - not a forum, but a network.

I know sometimes finances can limit your expenses - but it really is true: to make money you have to spend money. It can take up to two years before you are established as a VA.

I recommend joining http://www.vainsiders.com, http://www.vadirectory.net and http://www.ivaa.org.

They all have forums so you can chat with other members, and they all have job boards for RFP's.

If you're really interested in working for another VA, you should make networking your first priority - get to know the other members, join in the conversations (and be genuine about it, don't just do it to get work).

If you specialise, add that to your signature on the forums, show initiative, and don't be afraid to ask.
