When I speak to a potential client I always have a notebook next to me, not just to write down their specific needs but I listen to everything they say. I always get little tidbits of personal info, maybe they mention they are in the middle of planning a birthday party for their spouse or child, or they are heading to NYC to visit family.

All of this goes into their file so when they become an actual client, I'm ahead of the game. I may send an email the following week asking how the party went or if they were able to see a show while in NYC. I make sure to send cards or encouraging notes for the important events in their life.

Those little things let them know they are important to me and not just a check at the end of the month.

I have clients who will ask about my personal life as well, I make sure to provide enough information so they can get to know me better yet, I try not to talk about "me" for more than a couple minutes. Don't want them to think I'm on the phone chatting all day.

I think of each client as a family member so I treat them with the same respect.
