Are there any free time tracking software that you would recommend? Heard we could go use Excel?

A free time tracking software I utilized when I first started was HourGuard. It is installed on your local computer, so it is not available online. It worked pretty well and has some good reporting.

Other VA's like the time-tracking plugin with FreshBooks, but I never liked this program.

Once you have a flow of income you may want to consider moving to a Project Management system that includes time tracking. My favorite it myIntervals. For $20 a month you get a ton of features.

I use Toggl which is a fab little tool and also allows you to have a desktop app so you can literally just keep it open and click to start / finish projects. Couldn't live without it!

I use FreshBooks for time-tracking and like it so far. It also always you to create invoices.
I always like to learn about new business tools, research, and compare to see which one would fit my business needs the best. As a business grows, from genesis to having clients, business needs will change as well as the tools.

I use HourGuard and I love it.

I guess you just need to test out a few different ones and after a little while you will know which one works for you best.
