I'm not sure I agree that the personal touch will take over social networking. For a virtual assistant or someone who is marketing primarily to an online market of people who might be very far away, it's a great way to keep in touch and simulate a face-to-face relationship and build friendships and contacts that you wouldn't be able to face to face.
Social networking has been around as long as I've been online, since 1995, just in different skins. ICQ, AIM, Chat rooms, etc. were, in my mind, all social networking tools that evolved into what we have today. Sure twitter and facebook might not be around in 10 years, but they'll be replaced with something else that allows us to connect with people far away.
Since I'm just really getting started in this newest wave of social networking, I'm grateful for any tips and tricks I can get, especially on etiquette, so thank you for the post!
