hi
I have a 500gb external hard drive which is password protected. I back up everyday and it is kept away from my office over night. Having lost data due to power cuts and people errors. It is essential and only takes a few minutes but can save you hours.

Regards
Karen

Just saw this post & wanted to add that I use Carbonite which continuously backs up everything on my computer automatically, in the background, I don't have to do anything ~ I've already had to use it when my laptop crashed & I replaced it with a new desktop a few months ago. Everything was restored just fine. It costs $69 per year, but I figured that was worth it for the pictures I have alone ~ now that I'm starting a VA biz, it will be even more worth it & can be written off! The only problem I had was I must have missed the fine print when I originally signed up last year, that there is no phone customer svc. unless you pay extra ~ but the response I got from them via e-mail was just fine.

I'm a major stickler for client confidentiality, which I believe goes hand-in-hand with protection of client information and security.

Encryption on files and hard drive, strong password protection, use of the most current and best internet security suite program available, and I use the following for my backup storage:

SanDisk USB Flash Drive 32GB with AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). I have several of these and I use only strong password protection.

Windows Vista: I use both the Automatic Backup and Complete PC Backup (this information is saved to a disk, then stored in a fireproof safe).

Currently, I do not use online storage and backup services.

I use a combination of my external hard drives and memopal.com. Memopal works well for me and was less than $70/year.

I lost both of my computers at once (prior to being a VA) and had to pay A LOT of money to get files restored. Now that I am a VA, I know how important it is to have that back-up and am certain to have the data in more than one location.

I do let me clients know that I use an online back-up service because of the confidentiality aspect but they are all okay with it.

I have read all the threads and taken down all the different suggestions. This is very crucial. Because I do not want to every loose any of my clients information. Could someone let me know what they use for their servers?

I am also debating on how to back up files because my laptop almost died recently. I currently have all of my files on three USB thumb drives, but am looking to get an external HD. When I went on Amazon to read reviews some people have noted that their external HDs have randomly died in the past, which was discouraging to me. I think a combination of an external HD and an online backup system would be ideal.

Has anyone had trouble with their external HD just dying out of the blue? If so, which brand were you using?

I also have an external drive that I use to back up and I use a service called Syncplicity. It automatically back up online, will also sync with Google Docs, Zoho and some other services just can't remember which. Cool thing about the syncplicity service is you can run in on different computers, or even provide access to specific files (think clients) and ensure that everyone has the correct version....

Runs in the background and simple to set up. Defininately gets my recommendations.

I learned my lesson after my computer crashed and I was not able to restore the files that were on my hard drive. I have an external hard drive by Western Digital and use Carbonite as well.
