I have used Microsoft Security Essentials ("MSE") in the past, but it tends to conflict with other virus software. When I did utilized MSE it did not catch viruses as effectively as other software. However, it was definitely better than not having virus protection. For a free software it works pretty well.

Tess- As for your comments about Norton & McAfee, I COMPLETELY agree. I have been working with computers for years and these are some of the worst programs on the market!! I also do not like AVG. I have had AVG crash too many machines in the past and I will not us this program.

Jay,

On my machine I am using VIPRE. I find this program does not slow down my computer operations like some other systems.

Thanks Tess! I'm going to share this on my page. A great resource. Glad it's free given the fact that windows OS is so bad when it comes to viruses.

A bit ironic, isn't it?

@Julie, I'm on a Mac now but at the time I really liked MSE as a free option. It's so hard to know which of these to trust really - there have been rumors for years that the companies themselves put out viruses to spur sales, etc.

Tess, I completely agree with this statement. I am sure it is true....just the nature of our society.

This is why I build my own computers from scratch. I start with an empty case and add the necessary components and software. The only type of computer I buy pre-built are laptops. (It is too difficult to get parts to build a laptop from scratch.)

However, this doesn't mean that some of the base operating software does not contain these virus traps...

Agreed about Norton and Mcafee. The advice given to me is that these really bog down your system. I have a very reliable tech source and all he uses is MSE. Therefore, this is what I use too!
