We use AVG and it has caught viruses that the other anti-virus software didn't catch. That's the free version, too.

I use avast! as my resident program and have been very happy with it. It has caught a few things. I also use Firefox instead of IE. I also use Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware to do manual scans once a week. I use more than one because I've learned that no one program can stop everything, no matter how good they say they are. Currently, the only firewall I'm using is the one that comes with Windows XP, but I'm looking into getting another one.
