Default .EDU and .GOV Backlinks...good thing?
I just found this in a LinkedIn post in the group Central Virginia Business and Networking, and I wondered if it's good information or something that's not so good. Anybody have any thoughts?

I would say so. They have an authority people trust and people visit them often.

I know when I do research for school or anything for that matter it is imperative that my resources are valid. .edu and .gov sites tend to have the resources and academic foundation/research behind them to validate their articles and reports with statistics and references. Though I may read blogs or ezine articles, I would never quote them and would definitely verify the information in the article and the person who wrote the article. I often tend to use Google Scholar or my online school library in search of information.

If one can backlink to these sites, then it supports your argument or position.

Hey Pam. I have read a lot of information over the last year or so when I'm looking for info on SEO and they all recommend that it is awesome to get BL's from these type of sites because they already have "high authority rankings" which is in the neighborhood of about 25% of your overall SEO success.

Check out more info at SEOMoz...which is one of the best resources. Oh...and kick some booty!!!

Yes, I've checked out SEOMoz in the past but haven't been there recently. I will definitely look there.

Thanks, Pam!!

Thanks Pam for clarifying. It does make sense that .gov and .edu have high authority rankings and that it can benefit your SEO if you are linked.
