All my non-billable hours are for business building. This includes product/service creation, networking, consulting, web maintenance and business planning. I am sure there are many other things but this is what comes to mind first.

For me, anything non-client related is non-billable. Like Lee, my non billable time would be what I spend marketing, networking and working on my business itself. (For example, I am posting here - this is non-billable )

Also, there may be negotiated circumstances in a contract with a client where something is non-billable. For example, someone may not charge for each and every phone call to/from the client or something like that.

As Lee and Chiva have said, anything you do which is related to building your own business is non-billable. Perhaps also learning time, for instance if your client gives you a task which requires you to learn a software program you do not have experience in, that learning time would be non-billable in my opinion.

Can someone give me an idea how many hours per month you spend working on your business as opposed to your client's?

I am trying to budget and get an idea of "reality".

Thanks!

When I first started this business I had 2 clients so I spent a good part of every day working on my business. I have more clients now but I'm still not full and I spend the rest of my work day after client work, on my business.

Invoicing, social media, following up with people I've met networking, newsletters, etc.
