Default Credit card processing?
Anyone have experience using a safe credit card processing entity? I have a client in the U.K. that uses a U.S.-issued credit card. They prefer to pay vendors who have an online merchant credit card account. They won't use Paypal. I told them I would not pay fees and maintenance for only one client, but they offered to pay the fees!

I use PayPal for clients who want to use credit/debit cards. The client does NOT have to have a PayPal account to pay by credit/debit card. Now, my clients that have gone this route are in the U.S., so I don't know if it works the same way if they're in the UK. You said they wouldn't use PayPal, but if they can pay by credit card through PayPal without having a PayPal account, maybe they would do it that way? (You send them a link to a page where they can either sign into their PayPal account to pay you OR fill out a form to pay by credit/debit card w/o having a PP account. The payment then goes into your PP account.)

Pam is right, but there might be other services in the UK you can utilise. Here in Australia there is a service called Stratapay and people can accept credit card payments on their website without the fees of having a merchant account. There is just a set up fee and a small merchant fee charged for each payment processed. Perhaps there is something like that you can use?

My question would be, why don't they want to use Paypal? It's highly respected and offers plenty of protection for buyers. It's an absolutely legitimate source for credit card payments.

Something seems suspicious. To get a US issued credit card after September 11th and the Patriot act, you have to be a US resident with a social security number You don't have to be a CITIZEN, but to get a SS#, you'd have to be here on a visa (not just visiting from the U.K. for 2 weeks). So, i'm just wondering how your client has a US issued credit card.

My fraud/radar alert is up on this one.

If it we're me, I'd tell them that Paypal is the only method I used for credit card payments. I would inform them of alternate methods, such as "You can also pay by business check," but that's all that I would do, especially in this case.

For me the safest credit card processor is PayPal. They will even convert money from one country to another. (UK pounds to US dollars, etc.)

You also do not have to worry about having your website security compliant, since all transactions are processed on PayPal's servers. They now even have a mobile credit card scanner (like Swipe) called PayPal Here.

Hello sparrow1974.

Can you say where you are located? If you are located in the UK there are other suppliers - you can find a list and compare them here at http://paymentbrain.co.uk/gateways. If I can answer any questions I would be happy to do so.

Best wishes,
- Peter

Thank you all, for answering my question about credit card processing! You know the old saying, "If it seems too good to be true, it is!" Those of you who mentioned that their fraud radar went up, there was good reason! It turns out this was a scam. Sorry for making you go through the hoops figuring this one out! I appreciate all your help and am going to be a lot more discerning next time!
