Hello,

This is my first time in the forum. I have been in accounting for may years and have never really used Quickbooks. Any one have suggestions on what would be an inexpense way to learn without buying the software.

First, welcome to the forums.

You might try downloading the free Simple Start edition. It will give you an unlimited amount of time to play in it. The full edition, from what I know, is a little different but this will give you a basic idea of how the program works. If you are familiar with higher-end accounting programs QB can be a little strange. It doesn't look like a traditional double-entry accounting program so some accountants don't like that. It is designed for the non-bookkeeper/accountant to be able to use it. Just think checkbook, and old-school registers and you'll be able to use it.

Definitely start with Simple Start. Once you are familiar with it, purchase a full version (QB Pro 2008) and look under their Help menu for the "learning center tutorials." Their assumption is that you are familiar with basic bookkeeping, but this will help you get more comfortable with using QB.

I just started with Simple Start and I really like it. My old-fashioned Excel spreadsheet was getting too complicated but Simple Start has made my life easier. (sounds like a commercial)

My client (former employer) switched to QB in January and our CPA did a happy dance. Our old accounting software was complicated and difficult to get information out of. I'm really enjoying QB also and I found it was easy to learn, but you have to search for things sometimes, because they aren't obvious. Like any accounting software, it's all about getting the Chart of Accounts set up correctly.

I've been offering QBK Bookkeeping Services for my clients the past three years. We switched from Peachtree because of the high demand by CPA's. I too still struggle with some of the QBK interface, especially QBK PRO 2008. The graphic interface may look nice but it can be more confusing.

When we first made our change over, we would download the tutorials and then decided to step it up by attending online classes. I would like to see my team become Certified QBK Advisors one day.

Those are my thoughts.
