Idea for bookkeeping niche
Where I live, there are a large number of elderly people who have no family close by. They have a hard time keeping up with paper work, i.e. bills, bank statments, etc.
I've thought about marketing myself to these people as sort of a personal assistant, to help with these things. However, I feel guilty charging, since most of them are on a fixed income.
That's a toughie. What about doing some "pro bono" work for them. It would be a great way to get your name out there. They might even be able to recommend your services to family, friends. etc....
LadyBug...I too thought of this niche and then like you thought, well I would hate to charge them for helping out. Plus I thought it would be more beneficial if you were with them face to face to help with there services. Sometimes I check out care.com to see if there is anyone who needs elder assistance in the area. Alot of times though it entails much more than bookkeping!

Another way of looking at this is finding charities that work in the sector, outline your service to them and see if it is something that they would like to offer/have funding for or see if you can get funding for this service yourself.
My MIL lives in an over 55 community and I personally have helped many of the residents within the community at a significantly lower rate. In return they have spread the word about what I do and I have received a few great paying projects and 1 retainer client. I believe in paying it forward and it works for me!
I provide bookkeeping services at a reduced rate (45% discount) for seniors over 70. My father-in-law is 91 and gets soooo confused by all the papers! I pay his bills and track/reconcile his bank accounts. He still has an accountant doing his year-end taxes, tho...
I too have considered offering bookkeeping/bill paying help to seniors. I think that there is a real need out there for it, but I have concerns that there could be issues with family members. How would they feel about a stranger having access to their loved ones finances? For those that have provided this service have you had any issues with family members?
