Hi Alyssia,
I find I'm much faster on the desktop than the laptop, which is important when it comes to something like transcription (but then I'm probably biased as I've used a desktop for almost 20 years) so I use the desktop during the day for work and a laptop evenings in front of tv or wherever for surfing, research and marketing.
When my last desktop died (paid over $2,000 for it 4 or 5 years ago) I opted for an HP Compaq refurb through Tiger Direct
http://www.tigerdirect.com/ for Can$245. The company came highly recommended, they carry everything one could possibly want and their prices are awesome.
It came with a CD which had all the programs I use. I added more memory, the 3.5 floppy drive from the dead machine (yes, some clients still use those

), external backup, webcam etc. and all the other bits and pieces I use and I find it to be a really good workhorse.
Both laptops are Dell and I really love the Dell products, but I'd had an HP many years ago and was equally happy with it.
Hope that helps.
Lynne
