Right, yes, I do understand the concept of basic business credit - but from the way Nikki's question was phrased I thought maybe she was going after a large financing deal or similar.

My business credit and personal credit are one in the same. I have began the process of separating them, though it is not easy!

It is really important to keep your personal credit seperate from your business credit. Even if you get a credit card for "your business" it will be linked to you personally and it will show up on your personal credit report as consumer credit. Plus, if you ever close your business, any credit that you personally signed for can not be removed. So.... you need a D-U-N s number from Dun & Bradstreet that will produce a seperate credit report with just your EIN.

It's not an over-night solution just like any credit issue, and they work with you over the course of several months to build your credit. I had a great experience working with them. Just be ready to put in a little effort, and it will pay off in the long run.

I started with the basic thing - my cell phone. I had my cell account put in my business name with my EIN. I had to pay a small deposit, but it was worth it to get the ball rolling. Not too long after that, Dun & Bradstreet started calling me, but for the life of me I never caught the call and you can't call them back - the message just said we will try to reach you again later. It's been almost a year since I did that, so the next thing I am going to do is get a small credit card, perhaps Staples or Office Depot or something.

I just started my business 2011. I have a business account. I'm on the business 1 year, I'm going to look into building credit.
