Facebook: What Do I Post and How Often?
Posted 04-26-2013 at 08:09 PM by KristySchnabel
You have your Facebook fan page set up like you're supposed to, but now you're thinking, "What the heck am I going to post and how often?"
You've heard that people want to be entertained on Facebook, but that's tough to do all day, every day. Experts tell us that images have very successful engagement, but too much of any one strategy can become boring to fans.
And remember, your audience will be unique to your business and you'll want to tweak your mixture of content based on your fan's response. (You determine what they like when you look at your analytics such as the Insights on Facebook.)
To get you started, check out my Social Media Management Content Mix Pyramid based on my experience of what creates the most engagement (likes, comments, shares, responses to calls to action), which is your goal.
"Organic Posts" the most, which consists of real-time sharing and commenting while posting the promotional aspects of your business the least. Let's look at examples.
Level 1: Organic Posts
Fans love to hear what's going on with you right now: your triumphs, your setbacks, what you're working on, what you're looking forward to, what you need help with, etc. Not only is it "real," but also a way for your audience to get to know you, and people like to work with (and buy from) people who they like.
Examples:
Additionally, set aside time to "like" people's comments, comment on other's Facebook pages, and share other's posts. Engage! Always share credit with the originator and the person/business from whom you learned the information as well.
Level 2: Original Content
As a small business owner with lots to offer clients, you'll be sharing your wisdom with your fans on a regular basis. This is how you showcase your talent, but also let your fans know that keeping in touch with you is a way to get information that they need.
Examples:
You can't spend all of your time generating original content since you have a business to run. But you can share information from others that is valuable to your fans and followers. It's one of the reasons that they want to follow you.
Examples:
You'd think that the above would be enough, but no, you have to entertain as well because we all like to chuckle. If you can be amusing and educate at the same time so much the better (check out Grandma Mary for an example of this).
Examples:
The above four levels create a relationship with your fans and followers. Through your shares, posts, and original content that informs and educates, your fans will grow to like and "know" you. You may even create a sense of loyalty with your generous sharing of knowledge. With this as your foundation, your fans will tolerate a certain level of self -promotion (we all need to make a living after all). Fortunately, there are many subtle and not so subtle ways to do this.
Examples:
I recommend that you post at least once a day and not more than five times a day. Personally, I think three times a day is just about right. Don't be afraid to recycle your posts since the chance of a single person seeing your post in their feed is small. Vary it enough so that people who come to your page often won't see the same material in the course of a few weeks.
Good luck out there and happy posting and engaging!

Examples:
- I'm so excited to __________
- Wish me luck, I'm _________
- Woohoo… I just completed __________
- Anyone know how to __________?
- My favorite _____________ is this -- how about you?
- Share an image of something unique in your world (snow storm, cute animal, you at an event)
Examples:
- Blog posts giving inspiration, tools, and ideas to your ideal clients (at least once a week)
- Videos, ideally 1-2 minutes, giving your audience valuable how-to information on topics that interest them (once a week is ideal)
- Tips to impart your knowledge and inspire fans in your area of expertise (at least once a week -- increase engagement by adding them to an image watermarked with your business website address)
- Graphics that you create to illustrate a point -- these can be factual or even humorous if the spirit moves you
You can't spend all of your time generating original content since you have a business to run. But you can share information from others that is valuable to your fans and followers. It's one of the reasons that they want to follow you.
Examples:
- Share articles from your mentors or experts in the field
- Update your fans on upcoming webinars and teleseminars
- Share videos that educate on your area of interest
- Let your audience know about new trends in your industry
You'd think that the above would be enough, but no, you have to entertain as well because we all like to chuckle. If you can be amusing and educate at the same time so much the better (check out Grandma Mary for an example of this).
Examples:
- Post a funny yet tasteful video
- Share a cartoon (remember to follow copyright guidelines)
- Let people know about amusing things that you see or that happens to you
- Post a comical image
- Create a humorous image or graphic and share it
- Share examples of how not to do something
The above four levels create a relationship with your fans and followers. Through your shares, posts, and original content that informs and educates, your fans will grow to like and "know" you. You may even create a sense of loyalty with your generous sharing of knowledge. With this as your foundation, your fans will tolerate a certain level of self -promotion (we all need to make a living after all). Fortunately, there are many subtle and not so subtle ways to do this.
Examples:
- Create a variety of short promotions to nudge people to your opt-in page (where they get your enticing free offer in exchange for their email address)
- Promote your products, services, and events with link/images to your sales page
- Tout your upcoming free webinars and teleseminars
- Announce your latest blog posts and videos
- Showcase your talents by profiling your success stories such as an example of your work
- Share a tidbit of a testimonial from your client
- Cross-promote with a colleague who will share your upcoming event or product and vice-versa
The Social Media Content Mix Pyramid is a place for you to start. As you observe what postings are the most popular in terms of likes, comments, and shares, you'll know how to tweak your secret sauce for your particular audience. Review your Google Analytics and Facebook Insights to see what's really going on and create your own pyramid for your audience.

I totally agree and I keep the promotion to a minimum, no more than 20% of all posts are trying to "sell".
