It's All About the Benjamins, Baby

Or is it?
I know our media tells us everyday that money is the most important thing for your life. After all, they wants us to believe that money will buy us friends, nice cars, a big house, and even love.
We want our business to make money, right? Even if we love what we do and would do it for free, most of us need to survive and eat food, have clothes on our back, etc. I completely agree. But as business owners, shouldn't we still have some set values that are not effected by money?
There comes a time in everyone’s career when your values are brought into question. You need to make a decision that is based on your morals and what you believe may be the right direction for your company...but it's hard. Especially if your values are being compromised by the big dollar signs that are floating right in front of your eyes.
I was faced with a decision two days ago that made me really question where I want to go in my Virtual Assistant career and what is important for my company. It involved the omnipresent factor of money.
Whenever anyone is faced with a decision that involves money you can bet that bad choices might be made. There is nothing more tempting than earning, making, and getting more money. If money were not so important, I doubt we’d hear about as many black market dealings as we do. Or even white collar crimes.
In the end, I think I made the right decision for my business. I did not go after the money, but stuck with what I believe in. For now, maybe that means I earn less money, but I feel good about my decision. Only time will tell, but I do think that money should never be anyone’s number one priority. If it is, you end up constantly unhappy because no amount of money is ever enough.
Looking to other great leaders as inspiration, I thought I would share their thoughts on money and business:
“Human beings are much bigger than just making money.” –Muhammad Yunus
“In the business world, everyone is paid in two coins: cash and experience. Take the experience first; the cash will come later.” -Harold Geneen
“A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.” -Henry Ford
“Wise are those who learn that the bottom line doesn’t always have to be their top priority.” -William Arthur Ward
Have your values ever been compromised by money? Have you ever made a decision based on money and regretted it later?
