Do you have Spring Fever?

Happy April!
Do you have "Spring Fever?" According to the Counceling at Heritage web site, Spring Fever is two-sided.
"To most of us, spring fever means a burst of energy and a resurgence of growth, bringing us outside after the cold, short days of winter. Spring fever makes us want to run, jump and skip with delight like we are small children again. Spring fever makes us happy."
Most people are starting their spring cleaning, planting their flowers and preparing gardens. Others are pulling out spring and summer clothing and sandals and putting away the winter wear. This time is aways so refreshing, or so it would seem.
"Along with the lighter, brighter, more well-known definition of spring fever, there is also the disturbing and darker side of spring fever that brings lethargy and listlessness. Students may feel tiredness and boredom as the weather warms and the school year ends. Spring can also bring a more serious state of depression. There are surprisingly more suicides in April and May than in December and January. Some experts think a small surge in energy could drive people from thinking suicidal thoughts to acting on them. Others believe that the expectations to be happy are burdensome to those of us who are sad, thus exacerbating depression."
It is always sad to see someone who is struggling with depression and unable to enjoy the seasons of life. This is why it is so imperative that we understand that depression is not a "feel sorry for me" state of mind. It is a true illness.
"It is always beneficial to seek professional counseling for depression. If someone you know seems especially sad this spring, consider gently urging them to get help so they, too, can start to feel the beauty and joy of spring."
If have loved ones, friends or colleagues who experience depression from time to time, let them know that you care. Be there for them and support them. Even the smallest gesture can bring a light of hope.
