New Entrepreneurs: Should you fake it till you make it?

Posted 01-26-2013 at 03:01 PM by HOBureau
We all know that everyone has a journey and a story to tell about when and how they got where they are. Everything may seem almost impossible at first because of the many obstacles that we tend to put in front of us, but we only reach our full potential when we brush away those obstacles. Hmm… Isn't that just easier said than done? I would say yes. But is it impossible? Most definitely not. The journey can either be a long or a short one. So in the process, I believe that it is helpful to fake it until the business becomes successful.

What do I mean by faking it? I definitely do not mean pretending to do something while actually not doing it. I mean doing activities that would be useful for the business in the short and long run. So you may not be doing work that would bring you revenue ($$$), but everything you do should be a step closer to your goal. Let’s talk about some useful steps to take.

Schedule your day
Scheduling your day in a constructive and professional way would allow you to know exactly how you are spending your time. Isn't time the most important aspect of a working life? Of course it is; time IS money. So before getting clients, putting value on time will build an entrepreneur mindset. So let’s say that your goal is to work from 10:00 A.M. till 2:00 P.M. Monday till Saturday. Start working towards your business within that time. Allow yourself to do research on topics related to your business and do other things that may be useful to you. This may not be the approach that everyone takes, but it definitely is a fruitful approach for many.

Take classes and join conferences/webinars
After scheduling your day, you can try taking classes that teach about entrepreneurship and how to be successful at it. If there are certain skills that you would like to improve and later provide as services for your business, look for classes that are being offered on each topic. One website that I would definitely recommend for this is Alison. Alison offers lots of FREE classes like business administration, Microsoft, management, and the list goes on and on. Taking internship from other business owners is another way to improve your skills and gain some experience. There are paying and non-paying internships. Either one would be fruitful if you make the best out of it. The key word here is experience.

Networking! Networking! Networking!
Have I mentioned networking? There hasn't been a forum of entrepreneurs where I have been without hearing someone talking about the importance of networking. I think that this is definitely something that we can all agree on. The more people you meet, the better chances of you meeting potential clients and clients is. Many entrepreneurs socialize offline by going to conferences, coffee shops, or just meeting face to face to share their businesses and learning from each other. Some actually end up meeting few of their clients. If you’re like me, face to face meeting may not be the ideal way to network. Forums, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ are all tools that you can use to network with other business owners and potential clients.

Blogging
Blogging is a very useful way of spending your time. It helps your audience to know you better, and increases traffic on your website. I would recommend putting a blog on your website if you haven’t already. If you don’t have a website, please make sure that you get one with a customized domain. You don’t have to, but it could be very helpful. Wouldn't you want to direct your potential clients to a particular page where they could easily contact you for your services? I would think so.
While blogging, you may try to set a goal and stick to it. If you would like to post articles once or twice a week, stick to that to help your audience keep track of your postings. Also keep in mind that posting too often (i.e. 10 articles a day) can overwhelm them and drain you out of energy and ideas. Barely posting could also make your audience forget about you. So if blogging is something that you would like to look into, then start now!

I hope that you enjoyed reading this article and hope to hear some of the ways that you used or are still using your time to MAKE IT. As they say, fake it till you make it. Please comment below and share away!
