Hi Janine,

Well starting a Word Press blog has been one of my goals, but unfortunately it's not at the top of my list. Only because right now I am studying video editing. I have wanted to start one on health & safety for such a long time now and have been relegated to just posting links on Facebook. But I really want to talk or blog about this stuff.

But I am making progress I have to say. I invested in a Word Press online course or two a little while ago. I hope to start on it this summer.

Hi Janine,

I've been blogging for a few years but it's been a personal blog, Imp3rfect Mom. And now I'm beginning to see the importance of blogging for my new VA business.

So I have a question for you or any other experienced VAs. I'm in the middle of picking my target market. For example, if I was to pick women speakers as my TM, do I focus my blog posts on speaking to them and how VAs can help them?

I see other VAs talk about a variety of subjects and the posts are really helpful. But I'm not sure what my focus would be for my posts.

I'd love to hear any advice or questions you can share.

Jan

Hi Janine,

I've actually started a blog, but since last week, ran into a few issues with my site and have put it on hold. I do have a schedule (blogging calendar) that I'm sticking to, but need to sit down and write the actual posts. My plan is to write once every week until I begin building an audience, then I can up the ante to 2 to 3 times per week.

Having a plan (and a blogging calendar) really helps. For those of you who need a little push/inspiration, you can download the calendar here for 2012.

I've been trying to stick to tips and tricks for saving time and money, but that is so generic sometimes, I find that it's too broad of a subject to really focus on. What do you all think?

Hi JoCarole,

Thank you for your response.

I find your answer very interesting because your blog won't be about your business...is this so? Would you consider your impending new blog to be a personal blog, then?

I look forward to your upcoming blog. Sounds like you have great things in store...video and WP classes!

Janine

Honestly.... I tried to answer this with out lame excuses and I couldnt! I've been doing a lot of research since I'm just starting out and since I have a full time job its been somewhat taxing. The next thing on my to do list after rewriting my website is to set up a good organization of resources on my desktop or browser so I can save and access inspiration and notes more easily. That way when I'm looking at something else and it sparks an idea I make sure I remember so I can go back to it when I have more time. So I guess maybe that is it: organization & time.

I have a blog embedded on my site, but my biggest obstacle is TIME. I never seem to find the time to work on my own blog. Always seem to be to busy with client work. I know it is important for SEO to have fresh content. I am trying to get more items posted. I am even considering utilizing an article writing service.

Blogging, to me, just seem too open. I am a personal person that finds it difficult to express myself without exposing too much about myself. It's funny though, because I have been working on a novel about me that is based on my true life experiences. When I blog I want to be free and just let the words flow from my fingers but I hesistate and then I become flustered. I tend to over think what I want to say and then I get all confused and fustrated. But if anyone has any advice, tips or suggestions I am open to receive that information. Thanks...

I am still very new to blogging so I am not always sure what I am going to talk about. Things just sort of pop into my head and I want to talk about it. I figure the only way to learn is to read other blogs and the suggestions here on the forums, then just jump right in. I will either sink or swim (and, I am not good at drowning--ha,ha)

Thanks for the link, LeShante. I downloaded the calendar and also a couple of other great tools. I usually start writing, save the document (sometimes I have several going at the same time) and when finished, post.
Everyone likes to save money and you may offer some tips that others have not thought of before. I say, if you like tips and tricks as a writing topic and you have articles in your arsenal, stay with it. You can always change up later. You may even want to have more than one blog.

@J. Just let your fingers flow. If you are uncertain about your content, let someone close to you read it and offer their opinion. You are probably being too hard on yourself. Relax and go with the flow. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Hi ladies. I have a personal blog that I post on only once in a while. It's my ranting place.

I did just create a WP blog this past week for my business however, I really am not sure of what kind of content to put in it. Time to do more research on blogging! My brain is fried! LOL

Anyway, I would love to hear how some of the more established VA's create content for their blogs.

I would love to start a blog, but what the hell would I write about. Anything to do with being a VA has already been said as far as I am concerned. I could write about my personal issues, mostly political and religious, but that would be a bone of contention and would probably more likely lose followers or intended followers or business. To be honest I would rather keep my mouth shut. I have read a lot of blogs over the past few months and feel people are doing it because they are told they should - 90% of them are just trivial repeats of other blogs and forward no useful information, or they say absolutely nothing at all, just waffle. I just feel that it would do more harm that good for me to blog at the moment on my business site. My personal site however would be a different matter. Oh boy do I have things to say.

I told myself I would start a blog when I had a list of 24 topics to write about. My list is at 7. A few days ago I had a different idea.

When I have a code problem, I search my books & the software help section, of course, but I also search the Internet. There are so many articles out there & many times I have found my solution or a new idea for how to approach my problem from these articles, which are often just personal websites of coders sharing their knowledge.

The question occurred to me, "What's stopping me from writing my own articles & posting my own code?"

on edit: LOL Shadowcat! I feel that way too. I look at my list of topics & think, what can I possibly say on this that hasn't been said & said better?

I have a blog on my site. At first, I was hesitant, because I wasn't sure if I'd spend enough time to make it relevant. But the benefits are too great not to do it. So, I jumped in....

Here are my suggestions:
Don't start your blog til you have 3 posts written.
Write weekly and keep it consistent.
Use SEO Keywords to uncover potential article topics
Use a content calendar to make your blogs work harder for you

Hi everyone, I also am new to blogging so I am reading up on everything I possibly can on it before I really dig into it. I am with others on not sure of the content to write about and feeling like everything that has to do with VA's are already posted. I do hope to learn more as I go though. Right now my blog is not through anything like wordpress. I just have it as a basic one for now since I have been working hard at finding a new client to take me on. Which is another topic in itself...

Time, not knowing what to blog about, and not being a 'born writer' has kept me back. Like burneyvoa, I also like to read other blogs and forums, and have researched blogging for tips and suggestions. I plan to just jump in and start my blog in August. Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

I found that after much procrastination, I had to just do it. I had to stop worrying about the perfect post and write. It helped that I met some fantastic VA friends through a local meet up and they gave me pep talks, made me set a deadline. I use Wordpress, so creating a basic blog was easy. I give myself a blog schedule I can definitely keep- once a month posting. I have a Word document on my desktop and during the week I jot notes or link to interesting topics. Then I make myself sit down and write for 30 mins at a time. I let it sit for a day and then go back to edit. Final step- I post and start it all again! It helps if you enjoy writing, research, things like that. If you're a visual person, I'd suggest trying Tumblr or Pinterest.
