Default Website Content for Client
Hello All,

I have been asked to do a basic website for a new client, my first one!! I have only ever done my own site so I am of course a little nervous about it. i have a question about the content. Does the client usually provide the content that they want, or do you offer to write it for them at a extra charge? I am not the best person when it comes to grammar, so I just was wondering what the "typical" thing to do when it comes to this.

Thanks in advance!!

Clients who request websites have a number of options as far as writing the copy.

Some clients write the copy and the VA/web designer works the copy into the site, while other clients have the web designer do the copy and the design. And some VA webdesigners create the website and then have a web copywriter do that portion of the work.

I don't think there is anything 'typical' as I have been asked to all three or a combination of.

Some VAs are adept at doing it all and often charge one flat price to complete the entire job which includes the web copy.

There is much that has to go into creating a good website. If you feel confident enough to do it, consider doing what you can do best and then subcontracting out the other work to another VA.

Web copyrighting is much more than having good grammar. It is about creating an experience for the user while taking into consideration SEO, good keywords, image work, and promotional copy as well.

If you don't feel confident enough to complete the whole job yourself, then consider subcontracting out the job to web designer and offer to oversee the project for the client.

Thank you for the information Janine. I am ok with building and designing the site it is just the content that I worry about. I am still waiting to hear back from the potential client on what she wants to do about the content.

Janine, as always, has given you some great advice.

My own short answer is: if you're not comfortable writing content and aren't sure you'd do the 'best job' then either find someone to work with for that part of the project or let the client know you don't do content.

Also, if and when I write content it is always an additional charge - it's a LOT of work to write or even edit, and format an entire website.

Thanks Tess. The client will write her own content. I made sure that I put it in her contract.
