Default Should I include an about us page?
Should I include an about us page? Should it have a link to facebook, myspace, linkedin, and a link to any other business we may own and operate? Should we include this is a husband and wife team? Any advice or pointers on how to write and "About Us" page?

Hi Dekota,

Deciding what to do and whether you have an 'About Us' page is really a personal preference. I think it's a great opportunity to show a little of your personality and list some of your real-life experience that may be relevant to your service offerings. Including your social networking links and the fact that you're a husband/wife team may well be something you wish to let perspective clients know about and if that's the case, this is the way to do it!

Personally? I have seen VAs websites where I can't even locate their names much less whether they have any relevant experience and in my opinion, this is definitely not the way to go. It makes me wonder whether you have any experience at all and and whether you're hiding anything. Not exactly the impression I think they were aiming for.

Check out some other VAs websites. While I would never suggest copying other VAs material, it will give you a feel for what people do with their About Us pages. A little research can go a long way to answering some of your questions.

Good luck!

I created a 'background' page to display some of my history and skills. I have a separate 'links' page that has my badges and links to articles of interest. (peek at my website).

I was also not sure of the "about us" page. I have a lot of administrative experience but not a lot of "virtual" experience. I just was not sure if I could just write about my in-office administrative experience or if that would be misleading?

Hi Amber,

In my opinion, the administrative experience is all clients care about. You don't even need to mention that you haven't worked virtually; just make a note about what you have done. Show off your knowledge! I have never had someone ask me if I have ever worked virtually. All they care about is whether I can get the work done, so just be confident in your abilities when writing an About page.

Also wanted to say that I agree 100% with Kate. Not having an About page can make potential clients wonder what you're hiding. People do business with other people, not just businesses, so put a little bit of yourself out there. It'll help with building a trusting virtual relationship with clients. Just my 2 cents!

So, should I write about "business" or be a bit more "human" with my potential clients and put some personal, but not too revealing, information in on that page? I have created it already and added my myspace and facebook link. Any suggestions?

I suggest you 'wander around' and look at other VAs sites to see what THEY did that works for YOU. Approach it as if you were looking to hire someone and see what grabs your attention.

What do you think about including a picture on the about us page?

I have a picture on my About page as I believe it shows that I am a 'real' person, and, personally I like to be able to put a face to a name.

I personally think that you should include an "about me" page. It shows your potential clients that they are dealing with a human. I think it tends to put more trust in your business.
