Default Question about ghost writing and copywright
I'm hiring my first subcontractor (CRAZY since I've only been doing this for 2 months!) She will be writing blog posts for my client and I'm wondering who gets the copywright to the material. I assume that it's shared between the writer and the client...

Any ideas?

Unless specified otherwise by the agreements (between you and the client AND between you and your subcontractor), your client owns the rights to all the content produced under work-for-hire agreement.

oneclick-va is correct, but the writer/ghostwriter should spell out this point in the contract.

For a blog, guest posts are one thing, ghostwriting is another. Note that, strictly speaking, ghostwriting blogs is frowned upon, as a deceptive practice. Might it be better to credit "Staff" or "Admin" in the byline, rather than the executive/client's name?

But in any case, ownership of the articles generally accrues to the buyer, unless otherwise specified.

oneclick-va thanks, that's what I thought but I wanted to be sure.

Mary, thanks for your thoughts. I agree that ghost writing for a blog can be deceptive. We will be using a different user name, like you mentioned "staff" for articles written by anyone other than the client. I guess ghost writer is the wrong phrase to use. whoops!
