Default Post Resume on Website?
What are your thoughts on posting my resume on my website. Is this necessary or just list some of things from my resume such as education and work history?

Thank you.

There is a thread on this somewhere. I understand that the overall consensus was by presenting a resume to a prospective client, whether on your website or in any other way, it is like presenting yourself as an employee. I'm not sure if this might also have tax implications.

If you want to mention your background, a professional summary is more appropriate for us as business owners. It seems that one of the toughest things to overcome is clients seeing us as an employee even though we are independent contractors, and a resume would enforce that perception.

I think it's hard for us folk who are adapting from a typical employer/employee scenario to let go of our resumes, but then again it is also one of the perks of being a VA. Clients do not need to know our work history as they are not employing us, all they need to know is that we have the skills and knowledge to do the job we say we can. It would be like asking a plumber or electrician for their resume. Personally, I would choose one based on reputation, a professional website and the way they present themselves when I contact them.

I hope that helps

Thank you girls. I read the thread that you posted and it was very helpful. I just need to revise my resume to basically state my business and what services I have to offer.

Thank you for your help.

I would suggest not using the word Resume on your website. State your experience if you may, however not in the context of the word Resume/CV.

Best.

Thanks for the tip. I still have people ask all of the time for a Resume. I try to convince them still that the Skills are more important than my employers. I guess it is still a learning curve to many newbies that are hiring VAs for the first time. I even had one that wanted to run a background check on me.

When you have people ask for a resume gently tell them that you can provide them with company information and testimonials from clients.

If they still do not get it then turn the tables and tell them you like to know as much about people you are working with and ask for their resume. If they provide you with one then you really need to rethink if they are your ideal client.

I have a resume that I don't post but have available in case anyone ever asks. But then I starting thinking of it this way...when was the last time anyone asked the plumber, painter, or lawn maintenance person for his or her resume? Businesses and individuals have non-VA businesses they deal with on a regular or as-needed basis and I doubt they ask any of them for resumes!

I have what I refer to as a Synopsis of some of my experience and education. It is posted on my website in addition I keep hard copies if I happen to have an in-person face-to-face meeting available and email it as well to potential clients.

If I am asked for a resume -- I pause for effect and look questioningly at them then tell them I am self-employed but do have a Synopsis..... available and that is when I hand it to them. It gives me the opportunity to drive home that I am an owner of my own business - just like them. I also research their company before and let them know I am a little knowledgeable about them -- I also make sure to have questions so that it is clear it is a two-way street.

One thing I do offer that many VAs don't -- I offer that they can keep me on their books as an employee or contractual. Most prefer contractual (as do I).... but occasionally one's budget is only approved for one or the other.
