If you're going to steal content at least fix the typos.
Just last week I saw two VA websites with *identical* service info, rate info (except the hourly was different), even the TYPOS were the same! For goodness sake...

Has anyone else noticed this? (Website content clearly built off of and often totally copied from another website.) Worse, have you ever found your own content on another site?

I'm not talking about those VA definitions, pledges, etc. that are everywhere because those are clearly used with permission - they drive me nuts too though, honestly! We're all business owners, we can write our own definitions and pledges! Right? I mean, can't we??

I hate to be snarky but this is just silly - when I see a site for a VA who says 'we provide website design, content editing, etc...' and their entire content is ripped off!

Better yet, they didn't even fix the typos - it was a straight copy and paste job. Not exactly going to bowl the potential clients over with that now, are they?

The internet is the same as any other business medium. You wouldn't go steal a logo, theme song, or design element from an existing competitor office down the hall from your own - so what is it about the net that makes it appear to be a free for all of information to some people?

If you're going to own your own business you've *got* to act like a business owner and business owners either do it themselves, from scratch - or hire someone who can do the job right.

End of story.
Forgive the rant.

Oh, and you can definitely assume the title of this thread is completely sarcastic - in no way is it *ever* OK to steal anything, including content.

You are totally correct. We are Virtual Assistants and we should definitely make sure the spelling is correct. We are working for businesses and they can't afford to have mis-spellings, typos in their brochures, newsletters, etc. I believe spelling should be a good business practice for ALL Virtual Assitants. Ask yourselves a question, would you want anyone doing working for you that couldn't spell, add, etc.??

Don't worry about ranting Tess, we all need the reality check once in a while.

LOL...well, the spelling was actually beside the point. My problem was with this VA who stole content from another VAs website to fill in her own...

Plagiarism is a serious offense - but it was just so crazy to me that this person copied and pasted the website content typos and all!

A cool little tool: Copyscape. Type your website URL in and it will search the internet for any sites that have exact matches to your own.

I couldn't agree more! I tend to type faster than my brain which sometimes results in typos. Not a good thing, but I rely on another set of eyes and I always always try and proof read. The most distubing fact is the blatant plagerism that happens. I mean if a business owner can't be original enough or creative to their business, what makes them think they can offer those types of services to their clients? Oy!

ITA Tess. It's VAs who cheat that give us all a bad name. For some though, I think they just don't "get it". Of course there are those that just don't care and they'll steal anyway. Those are the ones that scare me. (But they won't be in business long anyway)

I just checked Copyscape! Whew! No illegal copies! I would be SO upset! I spent hours/days/weeks writing my copy to be just the way I wanted!

Well...sort of...not really meant to be a reminder about spelling - more meant to inspire original creative drafting of web content.
At least if you've got typos then they're your very own

Yes, but don't forget not everyone writes their own content, sometimes they pay so-called professionals to write their content and the *professionals* are the ones doing the copying.

Sadly you still need to check that the content hasn't been ripped off another site because not everyone who "design's websites" is trustworthy.

I got burnt this way.
