In honor of VagabondetteVA...

100 Most Often Mispronounced Words and Phrases in English

So that I don't feel like I'm laughing at myself all alone, please do share what made you laugh the hardest, what you are doing wrong and if you think you'll be able to correct your life long habit!

Me? Here are just a couple...

NOT chomp at the bit. BUT champ at the bit. "Chomp" has probably replaced "champ" in the U.S. but we thought you might like to be reminded that the vowel should be [æ] not [o]. (Does that mean when you say someone is "chomping at the bit" it should really be "champing at the bit"?)

NOT mannaise. BUT mayonnaise. Ever wonder why the short form of a word pronounced "mannaise" is "mayo"? Well, it is because the original should be pronounced "mayo-nnaise." Just remember: what would mayonnaise be without "mayo"?

I can try pridy hard ta change but I ain't makin no promises! :p

Also note, at the end of the list is a link 100 words we can't seem to spell right either. I couldn't stomache both lists in one day...call me a wimp!

So true!
Slang has become acceptable in our society via the use of SMS and IM...it's a lazy man's version of English and makes me NUTS!
My own mother the other day wrote something out in slang-terms (we were on Skype IM) and it just about killed me

I'll admit, this heading freaked me out. I'm considered fairly controversial on another forum I frequent (different subject matter) so when posts with me in the subject it's usually a flame! What a nice change! *whew*

That's a great post!

I'll admit there are a few on the list that I mess up! Several because they're not words I use or spell on a regular basis (if ever for some) so I've never really had to sound them out.

Great thread Sundi!

I confess to using the word irregardless instead of regardless. I don't know why, perhaps I think it makes me sounds smarter. Your link explains that "-Less" already says ''without'' so there is no need to repeat the same sentiment with "ir-."

But, I wanna!

I am guilty of using slang when speaking and typing casually. I sent this link to my 14 yr old for him to hopefully review!

I can be pretty bad sometimes also, especially when chatting or posting in forums. I think it comes a lot from chatting in the gaming world and you start to use slang and lingo that tends to carry over. I try to keep it to a minimum, but occasionally an "np" will be sent over to my boss in IM and I promptly receive a "huh?" in return...lol (btw, "np" means no problem...lol)

"for all intensive purposes" drives me nuts! It took me YEARS to break the hubby of this habit. I STILL can't break him of saying "see-in's how." AAAARGH! And, if I hear my sister say "I'm doing the waRsh" one more time, I WILL commit "sibling-side."

My co-workers in GA pronounced "salmon" sal-mun and it drove me absolutely insane. I even proved to them that the "l" should be silent (sam-un) and they still insisted they were pronouncing it right...lol

I hate text talk most of the time... I can tolerate with 2 (to), b (be), u (you), Rgds (regards), LOL (laugh out loud) and FYI (for your information)... but other teenage language confuses me... I used to use it all the time about 8 years ago but now... i hardly know it at all!!!
