Default OSCommerce Set up Question
I talked to a couple of vendors in my area and they are clueless about getting noticed online. THey don't even have online stores (I was shocked!).

I know where the freebies are for storefronts, but was thinking that since one that I use...uses the OSCommerce interface, if someone could help me through the "permissions" set up I would be able to fly away with this as a service!

I seem to get stuck with the files, not sure how to or what to type in the myphpadmin to set permissions as the install procedures request. I have tried loading the files on one of my www.godaddy.com websites (to empty my craft closet)... And I even tried www.freehostia.com (because they have a one click "easy install" OSCommerce offered there)....

ANyone want to tell me where I can go to get some training on MySql? That might help. Problem with me and getting stuck is I will stick my teeth in until I figure it out...eventually!

Thanks!

You don't need to learn MySQL in order to install osCommerce.
You don't need to deal with PHPMyAdmin either, the only thing is you need is to make a database and a database user and then assign the user to that database.

Here is a great tutorial:

Please note that this assumes your hosting account has cPanel, let me know if it's using something else.

While making your database make notes of all the information, database name, username and password because you will need them for osCommerce.

Now you are ready to install osCommerce, just follow these steps:

I hope this helps

Brandy - I've been taking courses in php, thinking that setting up shopping carts for people could be a useful service. I'm doing alright with it, but still would likely go with a package program if working on a real job - it's complicated stuff, especially if you haven't done programming before. Anyhow, if you want to take a crack at it, I'm doing the courses through www.ed2go.com, and pay $55 for the 12 lessons in each course. Well worth it, I think!

Hi Brandy,
Just to add to what Codehead and Mary have offered here I wanted to give you the link to OSCommerce's support forum. I really hate to send anyone elsewhere for an answer but our shopping carts are custom top to bottom so I've never laid eyes on an out of the box program. While I'm sure I could muck around and figure it out that isn't really going to do you any good. There you can ask specific questions about the program and learn from people who are more familiar with it.

I do hope you try the info Hamid posted though!

Then, once you're our resident expert you can pitch in when someone comes back with a question like this in the future

I do hope it helps, and I commend you for working so hard to learn such a complicated new program! (You're both right, it IS a very lucrative and popular service for clients at all levels of business - good move on your part to be sure).
