Default When they "pronounce" words
For verbatim transcripts, do you type words differently when someone is sounding out a word--usually someone's name--when they're trying to figure out how to pronounce it? An example might be my last name, which is Deyerle, but to type it how it sounds if I was telling someone I might type something like, "die er ly."

Most of my transcripts are verbatim, some even want coughs notated, which is the reason for what sounds like a ridiculous question!

Thanks for your input!

It depends on what the client has specified.

If they haven't said how they want it I would type it in caps as "DIE-ER-LY"

Hope that helps

Thanks, Bridie! Where this has happened (not very often), the work has been for large companies and my contact is not the person who requested the transcript, so I just wanted to see if there was a standard for this that I couldn't find anywhere. I actually had another one right after I posted this!

And yes, it helps!!

Usually when I get audio files it would include a list of possible names that may come up in the audio to help me recognize if the sound may have been a name or something else. I usually get meeting minutes that's why there's a list of names. Not sure with other files though.

Hello -- I just wanted to mention how I deal with this type of verbatim issue. I think verbatim should include absolutely everything but spelled correctly. What I do is if there is something said that is clear but is absolutely not a word, I enclose it in brackets, such as -- He was such a [woofah]. If someone is pronouncing a name, I capitalize it and use dashes -- such as "DIE-ER-LY or D-I-E-R-L-Y." It's always best to be on the safe side and be too perfect and nit picky than to omit something that may really matter. Hope that helped!
