Default Recording over the phone...
I have a one-time project client (grad student) who will be conducting some of her interviews over the phone. Through what she already had, and our previous discussion about microphones, her in-person interview setup is great. But she just e-mailed and asked what she should use for the telephone interviews. The only clients I have that do telephone interviews are large companies with an in-house computer-type recording system, so that's no help.

Here's an example of an in-line thing.

In-Line Telephone Recorder - Amazon

Then there's the induction coil one that suction-cups to the phone handset, but I don't think that gives very good quality. And then you can just record with the person being on speaker phone, but I'm sure that's not very good quality either.

Anybody know of something that's not too expensive and gives good quality audio? I can offer these three suggestions to her, but wanted to ask the experienced here if they have any recommendations first as to which way might be best or brands, etc!!

Thanks!!

Hi, Pam. I know that you can record calls over Skype -- there are a few different options to do that. Hot Recorder will automatically save the file as an MP3 file.

I personally have not used it yet, but I keep meaning to take it for a trial run.

I hope that gives you another option!

Here's an interesting review of Hot Recorder:

Doesn't look as though it (or the company that makes it) are very user-friendly.

Skype also has a program called Pamela Call Recorder that is an addin. There's a free version you can access from within Skype that will record for you. I don't recall the limitations...maybe it was based on call length? Anyway, I used it successfully a few times on short calls.

Here is a helpful webpage on phone recording. http://www.phonelosers.org/article/r...lephone_calls/

We use an in-line recorder that plugs into a cassette player. It works well and has never failed us.

Wow, thanks everyone for the super responses! I just sent her all of these suggestions. It's great to have the Skype options, as well as to know that the in-line recorder plug works well. (I think I'll pick one of these up for me to have on hand in case I ever need it!)

Because my recordings don't have to be high quality, I just use the sound recorder built into Vista. It makes it super easy to use since I always have it on speaker phone when I'm talking.
