Default Anyone experienced with time stamping/coding a transcript?
I'm reading the specs for a possible project and they mention inserting time code IN the left margin. I'm assuming that you'd have to have a program that did that automatically (kind of like Word puts line numbering IN the margin). Is there a program that does that?

Also is there a difference between time stamp and time code?

The transcription is from DVDs.

I created a manual two-key shortcut to insert time stamp/code from Express Scribe anywhere within the text of a transcript when needed for words I can't understand for a particular client. But I can't figure out how you would get that IN the margin or find software that would put it there.

(My friend and I each purchased Start Stop a few years ago because of the auto time stamp feature but for us the software had many glitches that could not be remedied even with help from the company, so we each ended up returning it. Except for not having an auto time stamp I much prefer Express Scribe that I've used for years and years.)

Thank you!

Pam, I thought there is a way to insert timestamp/codes using Express Scribe. I stay away from any transcription projects that require timestamp/codes.

I did one such transcription project and it was all wrong, from then on decided it was not for me it's all I can do to make sure I am following formatting instructions, client's personal preferences for transcripts, and proper grammar.

I was going to suggest Start Stop because I too purchased it for the timestamping/coding feature but also found it to be "glitchy". I'm looking forward to reading the responses you get here, hopefully I can learn a thing or two about this as well.

Good luck.

Hi Pam, your question/thread was tweeted on the VAF Twitter account and we rec'd the following response from @cplustrans

Yes, ExpressScribe hot key shortcut input time of file either Ctrl T or Ctrl Shift T; check out in ExpressScribe.

Hope it is helpful!

Thank you both for the responses! I can insert the time stamp okay, it's just that where they are requiring it is not something I can do. They want it in the margin every minute-- like where Word puts line numbers. (I'm assuming there must be some software somewhere that can do this that I can't find.) It's not a client I already have but a job from a State agency I was thinking about bidding on.

Admin, yes, I noticed it showed up on Twitter! That's neat!

Anita, I don't like messing with time stamping either but I was interested in the overall project so I thought I'd see what I could find out about this either for now or for something in the future.

Between this time stamp thing and a few other issues I've decided not to bid on it. But it has been a learning experience!

Thank you both!

I don't work with Express Scribe but I'm assuming you hardcopy it when you complete transcription? Microsoft Word has a COMMENT option that places comments in the margins. You can also show or hide them as needed. Would this solve you problem?
