Default Is Subcontracting for You? Revisited
A Virtual Assistant for a Virtual Assistant; sounds strange huh? The simple truth is Virtual Assistants are businesses owners and more often then not, get caught up in the day to day business of their clients work and find little time to focus on their own business tasks. That is where having the help of a Virtual Assistant can come in handy. Furthermore, a Virtual Assistant who finds their business to be growing may over time find the need to have a Virtual Assistant subcontractor help them with some of their client overflow work.

Today’s episode revisits the topic of subcontracting with the help of guest Collette Schultz, who spoke with me about subcontracting in Episode 13 of A Virtual Perception. Not only did Collette and I chat about how she, as a VA subcontractor, has grown as a business owner in the last year or so, we also discussed the topic of what type of person may be best suited for subcontracting work, finding work and more.

Awesome interview with Collette, Darlene. As a VA business owner, who is also a subcontractor for a few VA practices, I found this discussion quite interesting and informative.

Take for example the discussion on networking and marketing - without even knowing it up until the last few months, I was doing what was discussed. I've gained sub positions by implementing these - in fact two contacted me this last week as a result of me subbing for some other VA's and the word getting out that way, too. I am living proof that this does indeed help so much.

Also, rates. Always a source of confusion for subs. I have found that the advice in the interview was right on the "money." I would also add that in my experience a lot of VA's that sub out work seem to have their own subcontracting rates - and (a huge plus), those rates are sometimes at or above my normal non-sub rates.

Another point in the interview was about who is best suited for being a subcontractor. Collette's description of this was great. I've got to say that I fell into the coach and player areas - a good thing since I have my own VA business aside from being a subcontractor.

Oh! And non-disclosure and respecting the other VA's interests was super!

Okay. I could write a mini book about how great this interview was, so I'm going to finish up here by saying that anyone interested in subbing should really listen to this interview. Wonderful information!

Thank you both!

Darlene, just listened to the podcast. Very informative and all of your questions were the same ones I had. Gave me answers to questions I had concerning subcontracting. Your podcast series is a valuable resource for VAs.
Thank you.

Very nice interview!

I agree with Collette on finding the niche within the general services. Nicely stated, Collette!

Thank you, Darlene!

Just listening to this podcast again has made me get energized. I really hope those wanting to subcontract or finds subs use this resource. Maybe I can do an annual interview with you to share my progress with the group.

I had the same experience. A very negative person/circumstance in the workplace pushed me to ask, "why am I putting myself through this?" I know the answer is "money", but if I have to be out there earning a living, there has to be hope that it at least doesn't have to be such a miserable experience.

Very informative podcast, thank you so much!

It's funny when I look back how far I've come. What I was just told and experiencing is that there will always be issues but it's a matter of turning those issues into an opportunity. Now I'm at the point that this issue has shifted and I am shifting my potential opportunity for 2012.

Who else is with me?
