My question: Isn't subcontracting for another VA a conflict of interest? How can you market yourself if you are working for someone in the same field you are in?

Darlene, I always look forward to your new episodes. This is a great topic and I really appreciate you taking the time to explore subcontracting.

Any VA who is interested in subcontracting should definitely listen to this podcast!

Colette, Kena, and Diane - great interviews

@justcat - I don't work as a sub but I have subbed out projects to a few VAs from here on the boards and all of the VAs I work with are actively building their practices in various industries and aren't at all prevented from marketing or growing as business owners.

Hi justcat

I provide subcontracting services to other VA's, as well as market my own services. I've never looked at subcontracting as a conflict of interest and as a matter of fact, for someone just starting in the VA industry subcontracting could actually be in their best interest.

If I'm contacted regarding a certain service that I don't offer or even if I feel another VA(well known) could help better meet this clients particular request - I refer them to that particular VA. Several of the VA's I refer potential clients to, If I can't meet their needs as I see fit, are extremely busy at this time. Which allows a subcontractor to pickup some of the work flow.

Thats my take on subcontracting - hope it helps.

@DarleneVictoria - As always, wonderful podcast. I enjoyed hearing other comments and feedback on subcontracting. Oh, and isn't it funny how you think you sound so different when listening to yourself? Wow, I never realized I sounded like that.

Hi, There also are VAs that just work as sub-contractors. The upside of this is they don't have to actively market themselves, they get the overflow. I guess this would be ideal for VAs that don't want to work themselves to the bone but just be assured of a certain amount of hours each week or month. But that would probably mean working for a few different VA practices.

That's the best part of being a VA there's really no so called "competition" the world is large and there are many opportunites for all of us to expand in our own specialty.

Like someone else mentioned I only subcontract righ now because I do it part-time and it doesn't take as much my time to market myself. Don't get me wrong you still do have to market yourself.

Darlene,
Great podcast! Full of educational information for someone like me just starting to market myself. The interviews with Collette, Kena and Diane were also full of incite. Thank you to all 4 of you for being so generous with your knowledge.
I look forward to more of your podcasts.
Best Wishes,
Marlene

I am so glad many of you have found this podcast episode to be helpful and insightful!

I wanted to let you all know that Laura Pumo (who I mentioned briefly towards the end of this podcast) will be doing another VA Subcontractor teleclass. It is free and takes place this evening. Megan Barber posted the details on the Virtual Assistant Forums calendar here: http://www.virtualassistantforums.co...2-26&e=226&c=1 It's at 1pm EST.

I thought it was very extensive. I am typing up my summary now of everything she talked about. If anyone wants a copy just let me know and I will send it over later on today.

Karen, if you haven't listened to Darlene's podcast "Is Subcontracting For You" it may be helpful. She specifically talks about what you're looking for an opportunity to subcontract to get the experience.
