To Those of You with Lawyer Clients

To those of you who have Lawyer clients, how did you go about marketing to obtain those clients? Do you necessarily have to have paralegal education or paralegal experience?

I don't believe so. I think it would depend greatly on the type of service they lawyer will require. I provide services for one lawyer and I have no legal background.

I agree with ciboney, it depends on what kind of work you are doing for an attorney. Paralegals do a lot of legal writing and research for the lawyer.

It also depends on the lawyer. I know a few that wouldn't dream of working with someone that didn't have formal legal training, but yet others that wouldn't have such requirements.

As far as marketing goes, all the lawyers I have as clients I have obtained through word of mouth referrals except two who have found me through my website.

I also think that it depends on the lawyer as well as the location of the law practice. Both my attorney clients would not think to use someone with no legal background. As for where to obtain the attorneys - craigslist and word of mouth is where I obtained all of my clients.

It greatly depends on the type of work the attorney is seeking. If they are seeking a legal secretary, a degree or certificate is generally not necessary. If they are seeking a VP to perform legal research, writing, drafting pleadings and so on, you will most likely need the degree or certification. I am a paralegal with a certificate and Bachelor of Science majoring in paralegal studies. All of my attorney clients were seeking a VP with extensive experience in legal research, writing and drafting.
