Hi Jean,

I am a real estate conveyancing paralegal by training and the kinds of services I provide lawyers involve mostly document preparation. Some of the services involve receiving mortgage documents from lending institutions for completion, performing Land Titles searches, preparing Affidavits, preparing Dower Affidavits, completing Foreign Ownership Forms, completing Transfers of Land and doing the financial calculations related to the purchase or sale.

Real estate conveyancing would be different in the States as would the rules governing what is and is not allowed. As a real estate paralegal, I can only perform these duties under the supervision of a practicing lawyer. I can not independently provide these services nor would I wish to do so.

My real estate conveyancing certification was obtained through a college here located in Alberta and took me two years to complete.

Hope that helps!

Kate,

Thank you so much for your information. Unfortunately, all services that you provide sounds pretty specific and they require training (not something that I already have).

I have a prospect who said she might be interested in using a VA, but I would like to get some idea of what kind of paperwork it might be.

I guess I'd give it a shot anyway. Thanks again

Hi Jean,

I spent close to 30 years working with attorneys (I started when I was a small child of course lol ), many of those years in a real estate paralegal capacity, however there are many services you can provide that require no legal training, such as reports, invoicing, making revisions from markups to contracts and leases and transcription.

Any questions or concerns, just post to the forum and you'll get lots of helpful suggestions from the great folks here.

Good luck!

Lynne

Jean,

As Lynne stated, there are things we do for attorneys that don't require that level of training, but it really depends on what kind of paperwork she is asking for help with.

My recommendation would be to simply ask her outright what she needs help with and be upfront with your abilities and skill set. She will be far more appreciative if you are honest about your capabilities and it will save both of you from headaches in the long run. If you can't help her out, you can still offer to help her find someone else who can. Clients are often impressed when you do this as it shows a level of professionalism they sometimes don't expect and usually guarantees an ongoing relationship one way or another.

Good luck!

So, if you are typing documents for them or invoicing - how do they get the information to you? do they scan handwritten documents or do you pick them up or ?? I am having trouble connecting the dots and am really trying to get started.
Thanks!

I was hoping someone could maybe answer me on the discussion about the typing of documents. How do your clients get you the information? do they scan it to you or fax it or ??
