Re: Any Bankruptcy Virtual Assts on the board?
I got all excited for a moment and then realised that I am in Australia, so the laws will all be different, so not much help I'm afraid sorry. I spent 13 years working for Deloitte in the Corporate Reorganisation Group which does bankruptcy and corporate administration/receiverships, which you can imagine is booming at the moment. I'm hoping to get some work out of them since they are so busy! ;-) Good luck with the test, I'm sure you'll breeze through.

Thanks! My goal is to take the test by the end of the month but I have already gotten my attorney list together so as soon as I pass my test, the postcards are going out

Re: Any Bankruptcy Virtual Assts on the board?
Hi Margaret! I'm also a VBA, but not currently processing petitions for attorneys. Due to the bankruptcy training I received, I was contacted by another VA to assist a bankruptcy trustee with a large year-end project. Things worked out really well, as it allowed me to learn even more & view the bankruptcy process from the trustee's angle. I've been asked to continue a bit longer into 2009, so I'm definitely grateful & thrilled about that! Should I end up preparing petitions for attorneys later on, this experience will be a great help.
Good luck!

Re: Any Bankruptcy Virtual Assts on the board?
Hi Margaret, what training and testing are you taking? I have a lot of bankruptcy experience in CA, and may get back into it in some form. It's a very paper intensive industry, especially with the mailings that have to go out to creditors if you're in the debtor or trustee end of things. But one focus in the industry would be to assist with the bankruptcy forms that are necessary to start court proceedings. I know a lot of paralegals/legal assistants offer this service and it's very lucrative.
Best of luck with your testing!

Hi Margaret, I've been a freelance bankruptcy paralegal since the late 1980's. You have chosen a great time to get into this field as the need continues to grow. The thing that makes it easier to offer bankruptcy nationwide, as opposed to other types of cases, is that it is a federal court matter. The procedures are similar from one jurisdiction to the next, unlike state and county court filings such as law suits where the forms and prodedures differ considerably. Good luck to you!

Sue, one thing that has changed in the last couple of years: It's not such a paper intensive industry anymore. Just about every jurisdiction files electronically now. Mailings of notices are generated by the court. Contrast that with the old days where each filing required 4 copies, tons of paper and ink burned up with each case. Now I hardly ever have to print anything. I email the completed petition to the attorney who uploads it to the court system, or I do the efiling for them. This has saved me tons of $$ in paper and ink.
