Angelica: LogMeIn and GoToMyPC are the top programs that I'm aware of for accessing files remotely. I've personally used LogMeIn on occasion and the biggest thing I would warn you about is that both you and your client need high-speed internet access for it to really work. Also, you have to realize that LogMeIn is installed on THEIR computer, then you use the internet to go get logged in.

QuickBooks also has a service called Remote Access. It carries a modest monthly fee, although I get it free as a ProAdvisor. It's essentially the same thing. Your client installs the Remote Access piece on their computer, then you use the internet to login to their QuickBooks.

HTH!

Deb, I need to install Log me In on my sister's computer but she doesn't have high speed Internet. She has Verizon Dsl. So I am wondering now if this would not work that well or at all? Did you ever try this with Dsl?

Thanks

Jo-Carole: My best suggestion is to just try it. It's free, so what do you have to lose In my experience, it all depends on the application you're trying to access. QB is a ram hog and can drive you crazy over a slow connection. But it doesn't hurt to try!

Jo-Carole,
DSL is the same thing as high speed internet. Log me in is not so great with dialup.

Angelica,
If your client is on a network you can also access using VPN and if you know your ISP address you can use Microsoft Network connections.

Ok, I will, I did try on my desktop and laptop at home just to see how it worked. I ran into a glitch somehow and wasn't able to access my desktop then I gave up.

I have to be more persistent. It just seems that I don't have a lot of time to learn new applications unless it is something I really need at the moment! Thanks

Thanks Lee, that does help me, my sister just got her first PC recently and is really a beginner.

I do need to help her get started but she lives two counties away from me from me. 'm glad Deb said that I would have to install the program on her machine, I didn't know that. I was going to install it on mine.

I'm driving up this Friday to see her so I am going to set it up then. Thanks

Thank you Deb for the infor. It really helped. I was going crazy last night trying to set mine up. I think I need to upgrade to Windows XP though I have Windows XP Home Edition and I read somewhere that it doesn't allow the remote access, is that correct?

Just wondering, my sister has Vista Home and I have Vista Business. Does anyone know if this would prevent me from accessing her PC? Thanks again.

Hi Jo-Carole,

I use Logmein (free) on my Vista laptop to access my XP desktop. So there are no compatibility issues there that I am aware of. Don't know about the difference between Vista Business and Vista Home but the program is for free so no loss in trying it out. I wouldn't think there would be a problem between the two.
