Default updating my knowledge
I am looking into offering bookkeeping as one of my services-just basic services. I took business and accounting classes in college (back in 1998 or so!) That was when it was old school with a pencil and ledgers! What would be the best way for me to update my knowledge?

The biggest bookkeeping software in use in the US currently is QuickBooks. I would check into finding an older version to learn on (maybe through ebay?) and then use their tutorials to 'brush up' on your bookkeeping skills.

QuickBooks is definitely the most widely used, and in my opinion, the best way to go for bookkeeping. As far as "just basic services" be careful. One thing can lead to another in bookkeeping quickly. I also had to learn bookkeeping with pencil and ledger and I'm glad I did. Learning it that way has helped me with QB. Bookkeeping and QB go hand in hand but knowing debits and credits before having to learn the software was much easier to me. I guess my advice is brush up on your bookkeeping skills before taking on QB. In the beginning when I tried to do both at the same time, I found it confusing. You've already had accounting classes so you may be better prepared. I had to start from scratch. :-)

Try downloading a free trial version of QuickBooks to try.
