Default HST question.
Hello fellow Canadians, esp those in Ontario.

I'm slightly confused. Back in March I received a booklet detailing who charges what. Concerning the switch from GST to HST.

In the booklet it said that bookkeepers must start charging 13% HST for their services. In another booklet I got 2 months ago, it mentions nothing about bookkeeping or any type of accountancy services among the list of those needing to change.

I have checked various gov websites, and other web sites and I'm getting all kinds of conflicting info.

Mainly from the gov sites I understand that Bookkeepers are considered a small business and if the business makes more then $30,000 in the year it has to charge 5% HST (old GST rate) to it's clients. If under, then it is still a matter of choice.

So, anyone have any firm, definate, 100% sure and accurate knowledge of what taxes a Virtual Bookkeeper has to charge?

Kim.

Hi Kim,

You are correct. The Canada Revenue Agency website states:

You are a small supplier and do not have to register if you meet one of the following conditions:
■ you are a sole proprietor and your total revenues from taxable supplies (before expenses) from all of your businesses are $30,000 or less in the last four consecutive calendar quarters or in any single calendar quarter;

You can find all GST/HST information here http://bit.ly/azmmzM.

Yay! Thank you for the link. My husband has a copy of this from 2 years ago when he needed to set up his GST number and the info was a little old. This clears up a lot of questions I had.

Wonder why I couldn't find this on the CCRA site?

Kim.
