Default How much accounting education?
Hi guys!

I haven't been on in a while, my va business has taken a back burner since I've had another baby (that makes 4, if anyone's counting!) and also moved in the fall. It's been one crazy year for me!

Anyway, I'm ready to throw myself in the pool and see if I can swim. I'm seriously considering taking online classes to get at least an associates degree in accounting. It's something that I've always thought I had a knack for but not a lot of experience. My question is, how much education do you have and how has it helped in your virtual assistant business ventures? I'm really just getting a feel for this again and would love any input.

Thanks again!

Hi Norma, I am not a bookkeeper, but hate to see a question go unanswered So - here are a few suggestions to help you get the info you are looking for.

Read through the thread titles in this section, you'll find a few similar conversations that might tip you off, such as:

What does virtual bookkeeping involve?

How to get started [in bookkeeping]?

Updating my knowledge

Which organization and/or certification is best?

I don't know what level of info you're looking for, so I hope this helps. And in the meantime, maybe the thread bump will bring in some more focused replies!

Norma,

I went to college for my accounting education and I would recommend for anyone who does bookkeeping to have at least 2 years (or the equivalent of an abbreviated program). I am selective on my bookkeeping offerings since I do not keep up on changes like I used to when it was a FT job.

If you are considering services such as invoicing or collection then I would recommend at least a basic class or two. But please know that it can be easy to make a costly mistake if you do not have the proper knowledge of laws and practices.

I am a huge proponent of continuing education. I set aside a part of my budget for professional development and I truly believe that it is making all the difference in my business. You do not necessarily need costly programs or classes, sometimes it is as simple as a workshop, seminar or book.

Hope this helps you make the choice.

Hi Norma

My suggestion, in addition to what the others have said, would be to join a bookkeepers association. Look for one that provides a members discussion forum. Like this forum the information and help you can receive from other bookkeepers is invaluable.

Hi Norma

Although I am in the UK and therefore governed by different accountancy qualifications and professional associations from yours, I would say that a qualification is not sufficient to offer accountancy/bookkeeping as a service. I agree with Lee that experience is essential together with a qualification.

Good luck with your plans.

Sue
