Default help with sharing QB files
Hello QB users,
Can you please share your experiences with sharing files. I have a client who would like it if she can have acess to her QB files on her compter (just to review not edit). I also need to move her files from my old laptop to my new one.Thank you in advance for your feedback.

If she just needs it for information purposes and won't be editing it, you could just email her a copy of the file, she could then save it to her computer so she could pull it up and look at it whenever she likes. If the file is too large you could upload it to an ftp server.

I backup files and email the backups to my clients - they understand that any changes they make will NOT be reflected in my files so these are STRICTLY for information/report printing.

My one client insists on my snail mailing the backups to him when I complete month end. When I travel up to NJ at the end of the month I am going to stop in and show how easy it remote access can work!

Hello,
Thank you all so much for the ideas. I have even thought of using a flash drive if it can hold the file and we could snail mail it. (I would make it read only of course)

Rebecka, can you tell me what a ftp server is I have never heard the term?

Thank you
Teresa

Rather than a flash drive (which would have to go back and forth) I would burn the files to a cd-rom to mail...

I don't what the technical terms are for it, but it's basically an online hard drive where you can upload files for sharing with other people. Here is a link to FileZilla, a free FTP server you can check out.

I keep my company files on a flash drive (one for each client) and back up weekly to CD ROM. To send a file to my client, I usually make a portable company file and send her the smaller file via email. When the accountant needs a copy, I send them a full backup (not the accountant version) and then either wait for the accountant to do what he/she needs to do, or continue working and the accountant will tell me what changes need to be made.

FTP = File Transfer Protocol. QuickBooks has several options, but they usually involve sending the accountant version only.

I keep all my clients on a server so we both have real-time access to the file. I attempted the back and forth thing and it never worked for me. There are quite a few companies who offer this service...it's worth EVERY penny for my client's. They all LOVE it.

Moving the files from your old laptop to your new one is easy. Just do a backup; save on a flashdrive or cd and restore on your new laptop.

Server access works best. Lots of options out there and affordable.
