If anyone is just starting out or has simple accounting needs, Quickbooks does offer a free version of their software. It's not a trial version, and it does offer some good functionality.

Simple Start is basically an automated check register, which is great for a household but not as practical for a business. It's a good "getting your toes wet" program but I would recommend purchasing either QB 2005 Pro or QB 2008 Pro to automate your business records properly.
Yes, it is for those with very simple accounting needs, but it will allow you to create estimates and invoices, post payments, manage your bank register, track expenses, and so forth.
Of course, they also make it very easy to upgrade to a more comprehensive Quickbooks accounting package at any time.
Microsoft Office Live also offers a free accounting software that lets you create invoices and whatnot. I have no idea how it compares to QuickBooks, as I've never used that program, but I just thought I'd share another free option for those just starting out.
