Dealing with QB Pro 2009 & 2008
I have a client that wants support with his books. However I just discovered that he has QB 2008 while I have QB Pro 2009. He sent a backup of what he has so far and of course my version updated the data to work. My question is how (if at all) do I get him a backup once I have entered data to work on his 2008 version?
I feel that I will have to tell him he will need to upgrade to 2009 in order for us to work together but I wanted to make sure before I do that.
Thanks in advance!

Unless you have 2008, he will have to upgrade if you install it on your computer. But go on the help. the 2008 version of qb has an excellent help.

Hi Alexis,
I believe that you're out of luck and your client will need to upgrade. The 2009 Accountant version is backwards compatible to 2008, but even then you need to work with an Accountant's copy of the file and not the whole file in order for him to re-open it in his 2008 Pro version.
For anyone intending to do the bookkeeping for multiple clients, I would recommend buying the Accountant's version. It allows you to toggle back and forth between all of the industry versions.

Alexis,
Have you thought about using his software via Logmein? It's a little slower to use remote access but I do that with a client who uses QB and we can both have real time access in multi-user mode. Just another approach to consider.

I thought that the accountants version IS premier. When you load a premier version, it asks you what kind of company you are. Accountant, Construction, Non-profit, etc. Is there a plain vanilla premier? OR can you reload it and check "Accountants version"?

Hi Sara,
There is a Premier Edition (plain vanilla premier) and a Premier Accountant Edition. The PE does allow you to select your personal type of industry when you're setting up your file, but it doesn't allow you to select the industries of the client files that you're working on. You can do the books for multiple clients in different industries in PE, but you would not have all of the accountant tools for their specific industries that are in the PAE.
In the PAE you can toggle back and forth between different QB versions/industries to work on your clients' files. The PAE allows you to manage your own books and the books for multiple clients in all industries with all of the accountants tools available.
I may not be explaining this well, so you can also go to the Intuit site and check out the capabilities of the different versions there or maybe someone on here can explain more clearly. I have only ever used the PAE, since I am a bookkeeper. It is the same price as the PE, so for anyone with multiple bookkeeping clients, I would highly recommend that you use the PAE.

Re: Dealing with QB Pro 2009 & 2008
Hi,
Thanks for responding. I am a certified ProAdvisor (11 years) and have used the PAE for many years, but what I've never done is assist someone in installing Premier. So I was curious if there was PE sold that when you go to install it, you do not have the option of selecting the Accoutant's version. It was my impression that you simply buy PE and then select "accountant" when you install it, or is there a plain PE that does not include "accountant's." So when someone mentioned that they owned PE, couldn't they reinstall it and then select Accountant? or is that not an option? If no one knows, I'll ask my Intuit sales rep.. Thanks!!

Hi Sara,
Yes, the PE does not have Accountant as one of the industry options, so you cannot reinstall and select Accountant. If someone already owns the PE and is an accountant/bookkeeper, then they can manage the books for clients using the PE, but as you know, the PAE is the one with all of the cool tools and features geared towards the accounting industry. You can even use QBPro to manage clients books, but again, without all of the accountant bells and whistles.
I have not used PE, but only PAE, so what I've told you is what I've learned over the years from using QB. You can confirm with your sales rep or even a QB forum.

Re: Dealing with QB Pro 2009 & 2008
I have QB 2005, QB 2008, and QB 2009 on my system. I don't think its fair to require a client to match OUR software at THEIR expense so I operate in whichever program they currently use. If you choose to go my route, I think you can pick up older versions of QB fairly cheaply on ebay (assuming you don't already own them).
The one consideration is that QB 2005 WILL NOT support a payroll subscription. Other than that, all three versions are working just fine for me.
