I agree that someone aspiring to be a VA Bookkeeper needs a bookkeeping background. You do need to know the in's and out's. In addition, you need to be able to listen to what type of information (productivity levels etc) employers may want so that you can tailor these reports for them.

Your right with futher educating yourself and working in partnership with other VA's you can become a stand alone Bookeeper within a couple of years. A VA is not a part time job and takes continuous education.

Good luck to you!

I guess I am going to ask a question that I did not see while scanning this thread. If you are considering a VA business and understand what that entails -why are you not considering offering services within your current skill set?

Of course, all VAs must commit time and effort to keeping their skills up-to-date as well as learning new ones but doesn't require that you jump into a completely different area. I personally do not offer bookeeping services because I do not have that skill set however; if a client is seeking such services I will either direct them to a VA who is an expert in the area or subcontract.

Just wondering why.

I just came across this 'conversation' and I think it really helps clarify what a person needs to consider before becoming a VA, and especially offering high skill tasks such as bookkeeping. Perhaps I should start a new thread, but I do have a question. If someone is a VA and can do limited Quickbooks tasks (such as bill paying, reconciliation) but not do set up or anything too complicated, how would one phrase that to clients? Would it just be sufficient to say "I offer bill paying and bank reconciliation within Quickbooks?"
